New PWS gun with Factory Federal ammo
Customer together with a local "Range Officer" thought he broke the firing pin. That is the anvil from the primer poking through the back of the primer. Forbidden pepper was scattered all over inside the gun. Gun was still working, but a bit crunchy. Firing pin is intact, but severely scorched. Going to go ahead and replace the firing pin.
Customer is contacting Federal about the ammo.

The primers look ok other than the holes. My guess is there is a ridge around the firing pin hole that is punching the cups. Had exactly the same issue with a Springfield RO 9mm. It was punching holes in the primers of very mild loads. Careful stoning of the breach face fixed the problem.

A number of years ago, our HP rifle competition group ordered a large quantity of primers which proved to have similar problems. Sent some back to manufacturer who tested them and found that lot of primers had been made with a defective batch of metal resulting in pierced primers in multiple firearms.

Manufacturer replaced the defective primers.

My rifle suffered no damage and I didn't hear of any damage to other firearms involved, but pierced primers can pit bolt faces. Agree the customer should contact Federal. Those cases show no signs of excessive pressure; could be bad primers.

Are you going to try shooting the same ammo with your new firing pin? That's the only way to tell if it's the ammo at fault or not, no? Federal is supposed to be pretty decent ammo.

New gun piecing primers sounds like a warranty issue. I'd be a bit leery of what the bolt face looks like after shooting so many rounds with pierced primers.

What am I missing? Does PWS make a rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor? What I saw on their website was .223 Wilde, 300 blackout and 7.62x39. Those cases are stamped 6.5 Creedmoor.

Talked to PWS this morning.
Lesson 1. Don't call them. They don't want to talk to you. Be a good little consumer and go to their website. Create a user account on their in house warranty system. Wait for the e-mail from their in house warranty system to confirm your account, it's not immediate . . . never mind the confirmation e-mail never comes. Now send an e-mail to PWS asking for help with a screenshot of the error. Have them reset your password instead of just approving your account. Now fill out their on-line warranty request form including putting in the serial number in two different places on the same page. This is not starting out well. Admittedly I had high hopes for good service from a company in my home state. Oh well.

Yes, they do.
Primary Weapons MK218 Mod 1 6.5 Creedmoor 18"

I didn’t understand either. Thanks for the clarification :).

Hopefully the cause will be IDed and the rifle can get back to shooting soon.

Stat safe.

Did you try another brand of ammo to verify its the rifle and not the ammo ? [ With a string to pull the trigger , of course! ]
