I was at an outdoor range recently in the middle of the week and had it to myself. (A benefit of being retired.) I took my time shooting a Single-Six in 32 H&R, a Blackhawk in 41 magnum, and an Old Army cap and ball. Clearly a Ruger single action day.

On the way home I realized how enjoyable the session had been. No younger people with their Glocks blowing off 15 rounds in three seconds. No brass ejected all over the place to be policed. The aroma of black powder. Even some decent targets at 25 yards.

I've long known single action revolvers are my favorite handguns. That's when the words of Obi Wan in Star Wars came back to me: "An elegant weapon...for a more civilized age."

I'm sure that's not an original observation but it seems appropriate given my preferences.

I have two if those three Rugers...and I agree.

Something is to be said about taking the slow lane once in a while; whether it’s on the highway on a nice day or at the range single-loading rounds into the cylinder through a gate.

Congrats on having a great day at the range .

Stay safe.

I believe the whole quote is:

"This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon, for a more civilized age. "

I also like:

So im lumped in with all the ol geezers because I like revolvers most? Im 32 and probably what you would call a youngin! You should watch your tone gramps!

Im KIDDING! Well i am 32 and do like revolvers of all kinds the best. But i didnt mean all them other comments.

Colts are my favorite, with Ruger in second. Im not much of a Smith guy for some reason. I always shoot single action, even a DA gun. I shoot my 1917 Colt Army the most. Its not what most would call "pretty" but it has more character than any other gun I own. The finish is heavily worn and brown. The walnut grips stained dark from a century of hands holding it. Lockup is still about 95% though and it shoots to p.o.a.. I run 45 acp in moon clips.

Another favorite is this Blackhawk in 45LC. Though it RARELY gets shot. It was worked over in the late 80s and has a legitimate hair trigger and faux ivory grips.

My SAA "clone" is a Virginia Dragoon from Interarms. Nothing like loading those 44mags in one at a time at half cock. And dont forget, load one, skip one, load four!

BigBlue,
Your youth is forgiven! :D Glad there are revolver enthusiasts who don't (yet) belong to the white beard club.

Thanks for posting those pictures. I liked matching the classic blades with the guns. The 45 Colt looks fantastic but that old 1917 Colt Army looks well appreciated. I have several military surplus rifles from that period. They show their years but were well made to start and still function perfectly, which is part of the appeal. (My most used manual typewriter is a Royal made in 1939. It was serviced exactly once in the 1950s and still works like it just came from the factory. I'm hoping that quality transfers to me.)

I'll only go to the range when I know it's going to be very slow.
Going Friday or Saturday oh hell no.
Ive been goin on Weds. afternoons lately- practically have the whole place to myself.

I try to rotate my stock, but my M17, 686, Blackhawk, and at least one of my Dan Wessons usually make the cut.

The only day I have free during the week is Friday. I try to go shoot every other Friday to keep my edge.

Stay safe.

Old revolvers and rifles are my thing. And knives.
The pics were for a thread here a while back that had the knives AND guns theme. Pretty cool thread really.

And luckily, im just old enough to have used a typewriter a few times. And a rotary dial phone. We kept it because it worked when the power was out.

I'm not exactly a graybeard (although my children are doing their best) and I own my share of automatics (both plastic and otherwise) but I find my revolvers much more relaxing to shoot. Give me a .22 rifle and a .38 or .357 wheelgun and I'll happily bounce tin cans all day long.

Just before the Covid 19 hit I was at the range shooting my S&W M25 moon gun single action nice and deliberate. A young couple got on the lane next to me.
He was tacticool (head to toe camo with a Glock strapped to his thigh). He did a mag dump on his target at 10 yds that looked like a shotgun pattern. His girl
friend saw me and asked him what kind of gun was I shooting. He said a Fudd gun. I put a moon clip in and shot 6rds as fast as I could. 6 shots in the head of
the target. I asked him "What's a Fudd gun?" He packed his stuff and left. I shot another 50-60rds but couldn't do it again. What is that old country song--I Ain't As Good As
I Used To Be But One Time I Am As Good As I Ever Was---or I was just plain LUCKY!

The black guns and double stack handguns can be enjoyed in the same way if your not interested in burning through magazines as fast as you can. I enjoy my Colt AR-15's and AK's, but there's the M-1 Garand, Enfield's, and Mauser's, too. For handguns Colt SAA .45, Ruger Vaquero .45, and S&W 1917 are slow fire fun. I have a .44 Colt Dragoon Pietta copy that is fun to play with but not to clean. I have a backyard range, but I'm limited to 100 yards. When I feel the need there are free State ranges that are rarely used out to three hundred yards.

I'm not retired, so I have to go when the rest of the working stiffs go. With that said, I am routinely the only person out there with a revolver or lever action. I can count on one hand how many times I've ran into another revolver user since joining the place this time last year. Mostly, people bring a semi auto pistol of some sort, and AR, or some sort of bolt action on the 100 yd.

Most trips, I'll have at least one guy with an AR (or worse, an AR pistol) chucking brass at me.

I am of the mind that nothing's better than going to the local USPSA or IPDA match and beating the filthy bottom feeders with the noble round gun. I don't often win high overall at a match but I beat far more bottom feeders than I loose to in most cases.

I'm usually about 1/3 the way from the bottom. I get a special kick out of beating a PCC on occasion. Part of the game is having equipment that works reliably.

Use to go shooting at a friend's house well outside of the city limits. We would blast away with our 1911s, ARs, and AKs for the first part of the session but the best part was when we would get the single actions out and do some good old fashioned, slow fire, one handed shooting! Mostly Ruger Vaqueros in .45 Colt along with a Super Blackhawk, we definitely slowed the pace down considerably and had the most fun seeing who was the best shot at various targets of opportunity!

I think Obi Wan would have agreed that a revolver is..."An elegant weapon for a more civilized age".

I put 150 through my 41 mag Blackhawk Bisley this morning, and like you I had the range to myself. Had steels up at 25, 35 and 50 yards and couldn't miss. Also proceeded to blow several magazines through one of my CZs at 3 seconds a pop lol. Great day.
