So I traded a junk car(that I got for free) :cool:for this XPR. Wanted to get my son a rifle of his own for a while but couldn’t decide on what to get so I gave him the XPR just for something to call his own and show me he could take care of it. The idea was more “Prove to me you can handle the responsibility and we will talk about a nice rifle later.” Well he’s sentimental and stubborn. He killed two caribou with it this year and doesn’t want to give it up. Wants to make it nice....er. So I’m looking at trying to find a stock that’s not a true blank but raw enough that we can finish and oil it together. Recently this site, (rifle-stocks.com) was brought to my attention by way of another thread posted on THR. I don’t see the XPR in the action list so I’m curious what the inletting might cost if I had a smith do it locally. It may be obvious but I’m not willing to throw a lot of money at this rifle. I mentioned Boyd’s laminate and he doesn’t like the look and I haven’t heard good things about there hardwood stocks. Any other options? Smaller companies maybe?I’m all about supporting small business’ that aren’t as well known.

I recently did a Boyd’s stock for a Remington 721, it was a unfinished laminate. Overall it was a decent fit with only minor fitting inside the stock and some detailing on the exterior. I did this for a buddy of mine. During the process I reminded myself to only buy pre finished laminate stocks. They do drink up the finish. As to the Boyd’s hardwoods I have not had any recent experience, I did a remington model 11 buttstock years ago and it was more work than I wanted. I have read mixed reviews on Richards Microfit stocks but don’t have any first hand experience. If it were me I would try a Boyd’s walnut pre finished, spend the time together bedding the action and if wanted strip the factory finish and do a oil type of finish.
As to having a action milled into a blank, I would check out U.S Gun inletting and stocks.

My recent experience with Boyd’s walnut pre finished was not good. The wood quality and finish looked like bargain basement Savage 110E grade stuff. Not worth the money.
