I started a thread on Sept. 29 ("I think I want a S&W Highway Patrolman") which went to 4 pages, with great comments and photos. RK Gunshows is hosting a large well attended gunshow in Springfield, Missouri this weekend, and sure enough my S&W pusher was there this morning with a couple of Model 28-2s to look over.

I came home with the 6" barrel, made in 1978 by the serial number, N504XXX. I could not tell that it had been fired, so if it was not new, it was nearly so. The dealer said he had it for 20 years and never fired it. The blue box is original to the gun, with label information and serial number matching the gun. Factory papers and tools were not in the box, having not been transferred to the dealer at the time he acquired it, according to him. So let's call it "as new" with original box. The revolver was mine for $900 total. There were a couple of other Patrolmen offered by others at this show, in obviously used condition, with higher price tags. If I had won a bid for a similar revolver on an auction site, I think I would have paid about this amount after tax, FFL transfer fee, and shipping. I'm afraid the days of cheap "as new" Patrolmen are gone, for a while at least, particularly during this period of shortages. So, I didn't steal it, but I don't think I was gouged badly on the price.

I took it to a nearby indoor range and got it dirty. The maximum distance at this facility is 17 yards (51 feet). I did not have any .357 Magnum ammo loaded up, so I tried some .38 Specials with lead bullets, Bullseye and Titegroup powders over a wrist rest. Photo of the best group is below, and it mostly proves that my cataracts, arthritis, and tremors are not improving. I have no doubt the revolver is capable of smaller groups.

Thanks to all who responded to my first thread. It was fun to read and look at your guns. This Highway Patrolman has retired to an appreciative home!!

Congratulations on a beautiful acquisition.
I'm not going to lie, I'm a bit envious.
Put yourself in my position. This man is avery good friend. He calls me and emails me that his S&W pusher has come up with a new one than I have to go see it an love on it a bit. I put up with such deals because occasionally a crumb falls out.AQnd he has a wonderful cat named "Book." "Book knows the sound of my footsteps and immediately goes into a berserker rage. usually the fight lasts until I bleed. H's happy then.

Any chance the cats full name is "Shepherd Book?"

One of my great regrets in life is not meeting Ron Glass when I had the chance. But I wasnt a Browncoat then.:(

I have a buddy who calls me whenever he has an old revolver walk into his shop. Never thought of him as a "pusher," though. He will get a laugh outta that when I tell him! :)

Book became a member of the family about the time Mr. Glass died. We are Firefly fans, my wife is addicted to reading, having started her own book club years ago. It seemed natural.

We think Book is 20% Maine Coon Cat and 80% as...le. He likes the way Noz tastes.

Howdy

Ya done good. I think I mentioned that I paid $650 for a Model 28-2 that shipped in 1964 just a couple of years ago. But yours looks pristine, mine has just a teensy bit of wear. The Case Hardened colors on the hammer look terrific. Plus, time and tide wait for no man. Its your gun, but I suggest you keep the magna grips on it, I like magnas on all my N frame Smiths. The weight is enough to tame recoil and I don't need larger grips. That one is definitely the 'satin blue' finish that Smith was putting on the Model 28s about then.

J- Bar, Congratulations!

$900? I would have jumped on it. If it makes a difference you wouldn’t have gotten that gun in California for $900. Probably more like $1200. Regardless, in other states I have lived I never encountered model 28s so $900 would not have been a high price to me.

Honestly, Im a little surprised S&W didnt go with fixed sights on the M28 (as with the 58), woulda been cheaper and less likely to get knocked outta whack. Would have provided a little more value to the 27 as well, to justify the higher cost.

Looks-wise its a toss up, I probably find the fixed-sight Smiths a bit more streamlined and attractive, but all are good looking guns.

"Dealer had it for 20 years and never fired it", to "I took it to a nearby range and got it dirty" sounds more like it came out of retirement. Fine-looking revolver, you did very well at the price you paid. I can't even see a turn ring, and the box establishes much provenance on originality, even without the accessories and papers.

that is a beaut! you can put your pinky under those grips shooting single-action if your hand rides up too high (get the hand up as high as possible for double-action, imo).
thanks for putting a smile on my face. i bought my 28-2 brand spanky new in 1978 for $199 plus tax. it resides with my daughter now.

they are a tank so you can shoot any legal load and not hurt the gun. my standard load was a bunch of blue dot powder under a 125 gn xtp bullet for 1600 fps muzzle velocity.

An excellent buy! I, too would’ve faced the wrath of the wife if that beauty was staring me in the face with a $900 OTD fee.

Nice first-time shooting it, too. :)

Stay safe.

A couple of years ago I was at a local gun show and heard "highway patrolman". A guy had one for sale and the gent he was talking to was not interested. Once they were done, I asked about it and found a nice 6" barrel model in used, but very good condition. No box, no papers or any of that crap. Just a good shooter for $600. I have shot it a bunch and will not get rid of it. I consider it a prize and was lucky to have found it. No worries about a little wear or 100% condition. No excuse not to shoot the heck out of it.
