Not bad! I had rebarreled my Traditions St.Louis Hawken about 1 1/2 months ago and ended up using a CVA Hawken .54cal barrel.

Today I finally sat down and took my time, swabbing the bore between each shot, letting everything cool down, seating the patched round ball consistently on the powder. I even went as far as using a drop tube to keep the powder off the walls of the bore.

Using 90gr 2fg Gearhart - Owen black powder, .020" patches and .530" home cast round balls, I produced this nice little group. I'm not sure if I want to touch that rear sight though. Sometimes just the tiniest amount moves it over a few inches.

Next time out, I'll up the charge to 100 and 110gr and see how the group holds up. Very happy with that new barrel!

That's a nice group. Glad your care and attention to detail is paying off. BTW, over the years I've found CVA barrels to be darn good.

Two Questions:
What distance did you shoot at?

I like the look of that range rod sitting in the barrel. Any idea what it's called or where to get one?

Jeff

100 yards.

It used to be called the Knight ultimate range rod. That's a prototype in the pic. Lehigh defense currently ( as far as i can remember ) makes them.

I’ve always had very good accuracy from all my CVA rifles. That’s a dandy group for 100 yards from a muzzleloader with open sights.

I wouldn't mess with the sights just yet.
It has been my humble experience since shooting competitively with my BP rifles...(and maybe it's just me) that my poi changes slightly from day to day.
I keep most of my targets on file. I have recorded tight groups slightly left. The next outing might be slightly right or high etc.
I would collect groups from a few outings before I moved the sights.
Fyi...that's good shooting at 100yds.

Frontiergander,

Thanks for the distance info. I'm even more impressed. I thought it was probably fifty yards. Also for the name of the range rod. Turns out MidwayUSA carries the latest version (sold out at the moment) but they only go to 33 inches which is too short for my barrels.

I would be happy with a group like that at 50 yards! Nice shooting frontiergander!
