I have an amazing custom .375 H&H rifle and there's a possibility that I could buy another just like it but in stock form. If it's still available, and with the understanding that two .375 H&H rifles isn't appealing, what would you rebarrel it to? The magazine well has an internal length of 3.64" and obviously the bolt has a magnum face. I'm thinking something along the lines of a .35 Whelen or .338 caliber but with a magnum bolt face so maybe a wildcat?

404 Jeffry? Not sure you need one for game in North America. Squirrel hunting maybe. 416 Rigby? 7x61mm Sharpe & Hart? Wouldn’t 35 Whelen require bolt mods? Would other magnum cases with same base dimensions be the best choice? Then choose performance of the conversation based on your needs?

458 Lott?

This is definitely on my short list.

Also on my short list and it would make a lot of sense, and it would be a cool cartridge/rifle combination.

This was one of my first thoughts but the magazine is a bit short at 3.64" since it won't accept factory Hornady ammunition. The SAAMI max COAL for the 300 PRC is 3.700". For the handloader it might not be a problem but I'd need to do some research on this.

This would be a hunting/camping rifle that I'd most likely run with iron sights only so a thumper might be the best option. .458 Lott would be awesome, in a stainless/synthetic package too.

If just sights I'd go 458 Lott, just due to the immense ability to load it up or down to any necessary power level. I want one too.

.264 Win mag. There are more good 6.5mm bullets than ever, and it has a certain cool factor.

It would make sense to make the most of the 3.64" magazine well so I'd rather stick with cartridges with COALs closer to that of the .375 H&H.

Given the list below of factory loadings based on the .375 H&H, has there never been a .350 cal cartridge in this family?

  • .244 H&H Magnum
  • .275 H&H Magnum*
  • 7mm STW
  • .300 H&H Magnum
  • .300 Weatherby Magnum
  • 8mm Remington Magnum
  • .340 Weatherby Magnum
  • .375 H&H Magnum
  • .375 Weatherby Magnum
  • .400 H&H Magnum
  • .416 Remington Magnum
  • .458 Lott
  • .465 H&H Magnum

Well there you go then. A 358 h&h... It needs to happen now.
But the question comes to mind, "what could it do that the 375 won't?"

An all stainless .458 Lott really does seem to make the most sense to me. I've wanted a Caprivi in .458 Lott for years with a beautiful wood stock but I'd get more use out of a stainless/synthetic combination.

358 Norma Magnum.

Personally, I would buy another .375 then ream the chamber of one from .375 h&h to .375 Weatherby magnum and have one of each, redundant as that may be.

I had a 358 Norma mag, me and dad built it for a elk hunt were were planning. I was 13-14. Parents separated before are hunt we were gonna do, so the rifle never took a elk like it was built for. I shot a few deer and liked messing around with 357 bullets. If I built another rifle think it would be a 375 h&h or ruger. Probably the ruger.
