LPVO's for an 16" AR-style 308 rifle

Hello friends,

I'm shopping for glass for my 16" 308 chambered AR and I'm curious what ya'll think are good options for a LPVO. I'm mainly interested in LPVO for the same reasons they've increased dramatically in popularity. Why not have a 1x objective with the option of flipping up the magnification if I am so inclined?

With that said, the primary application is going to be range duty and maybe a little run and gun for fun every now and then. I've got an SR-762 I'm trying to glass and while it's an accurate rifle it's not a precision benchrest piece of equipment if you know what I mean? I think the piston is fun, though, and I do like shooting it.

I was looking around at LPVO mainly 1-6 variety and I came up with a few I put in the poll

The Burris is far and away the budget option, but could I get away with spending so little and still have a good optic? TBH I doubt it and I don't really like Burris, but if everyone loves this scope I might be willing to give it a shot for the money.

Then we have the other lower range options, like the US Optics and the Vortex Viper PST. I see good reviews for both of these and I'm currently leaning towards the Viper PST to be honest. In particular I've read a TON of positives about the HD-E, as well as quite a few testimonials that the Viper PST is only 5-10% worse for a third to half the price. Naturally I want to consider all my options though.

At the upper range we have the Athlon, Leupold, Trijicon Accupoint, and Sig. Of these I think I like the Athlon the best, but I'm really not sure it's any better than the Viper PST...

Then, in the realm of luxury, we have the Swarovski, Zeiss, Kahles, Trijicon VCOG, and Vortex HD-E. These are some pretty pricey pieces of glass and tbh I really doubt I want to spend big dollars on a low powered optic. That said, I am sure some of you have tried the full gamut and can offer some really informed opinions. Maybe I should be saving my pennies?

Please let me know if I've been led astray with any of the notions I've formed through my research, and make a recommendation so I can put some glass on this thing!

Curious as why don't you like Burris??

I initially picked Athlon, until I realized you didn't have the lower end one on here. The low end one would be my choice.

Then the Burris.

For LPVO I generally prefer second final plane, and don't care about fancy BDC reticles, and since it's a 4 or 6 power, fair glass is all I would need.

Then again, I like budget stuff.

I will say that my brother in law has the Eotech, ffp, 1-6 (I think). It's really nice. But it's also like a grand.

i've owned the vortex 1-6 razor hd gen2 and the swaro z6i and USO 1-8x, NF 1-4x and 1-8x ATACR, among others
I've competed with several of these

some very brief advice in no particular order
- USO is nice, but expect to send it back for repair
- vortex and swaro are amazing experience. it's like the optic disappears.
- swaro glass is awesome, but controls are wack
- vortex is awesome but crazy heavy
- khales is light and good glass. imho, good choice for range. maybe not the most rugged

i'll add that with all the people trying to get the new vortex gen3 1-10x, you can prob get a good deal on used gen2 1-6

Lots of good choices listed. Knowing what your budget is helps in picking a scope. Buy the best that you can afford and has all the features you want would be my suggestion. For low budget but good scopes, don't overlook the Primary Arms optics or the Swampfox optics. They are on par with the lower end Burris, Bushnell and Nikon optics in the price range.

I like my Viper PST Gen 2 1-6 a lot. Definitely like shooting with a red dot when it’s set on 1X. It was broken out of the box though and had to be sent in for replacement. The new one has been great though heavy at 22 oz. Dot is bright even in full daylight and the reticle is simple and not cluttered.

I have a Leupold VX6-1-6 Multi-Gun on my 3Gun carbine and am very pleased with it.

It does double duty as a lightweight coyote rig. I worked up a load for Nosler 60grn BTs and had 1 CDS dial made for that load. It tracks well and returns to zero. IF I was looking for a replacement I'd probably go with the newer HD series.

I've got a strike eagle 1-6x, I've got no complaints. It's very nice.

But it's not in the same class as what you've got listed. It's very good for the price however.

I put a sightmark Wraith NV scope on mine with and aftermarket IR illumination device:

This review is for the 4K max which is running just under $800, I got the previous version for just under $500. I believe the sensors and optics are the same but the new version has a faster computer on board. That is mainly important to recording speed IMHO. Note that this is a small TV screen (think VR goggles or a digital camera viewfinder) and not an optic lens. If you can get over that part, the rest is easy. The great part about that is that it is a very forgiving light box.

I have the Razor 1X6 Gen II-E on my Rec-10.

The reticle split about 100 rounds in. Vortex paid shipping and fixed it with a 2 week turnaround time. I have since re-zeroed, but have not put enough rounds to trust it yet. This is a known problem after googling it, I see I wasn't the only one.

Sadly the Barret it was on went down on the same range trip requiring a trip back as well. Sucks when you have a $4k setup just totally crap the bed. Don't have enough rounds through it either to trust yet.

I think my next try on LPVO's will be the Primary Arms platinum series with ACSS.

Mine just did the same thing after maybe 200 rounds of 5.56. I was pretty disappointed with that.
