This morning I joined the line at Academy waiting for opening time for ammunition delivery day opportunities. Ten minutes before opening a local police black & white pulled into the lot, parking about 20 yards out with clear view of the door and the waiting line. The officer(s?) remained in the car. When I exited, white shopping bag in hand, 15 minutes after opening and one of the last from that initial buyer crowd, they were gone.
My thanks to the city PD and the LEOs who recognized a temporary hot spot and made it point to be there for us.
Stay safe, y'all.

How do you know that parking lot wasn't just a convenient place for them to take a donut break?

I see waiting in line for any scarce commodity no different than Black Friday lines. There are ample instances of moronic behavior in those lines so I would expect similar risk in this case.

I dont understand what it is assumed they were protecting. A Hotspot for what exactly? A soft target? If so, then targeted by whom toward who Protecting a group of potentially armed yet frustrated shoppers from getting out of hand? If so, how much faith does the local LEO have in the lawfully armed populous? I've seen more pushing and shoving when TP was unobtainium than when ammo/guns were gone.

I'm just really confused.

It might be my anti-authoritative streak, but I dont put as much faith in my local cops doing more than the obvious (presence during known heated protest) or being called in by someone as a gathering potentially becoming rowdy, like if a store manager had put in a call to warn the police that patrons may get out of hand due to previous flaired tensions. They are super good at revenue stops, though.

I only disagree on one point. I find the 'thin blue' line flag extremely disrespectful..

Too much 'individuality/division', when the regular old RED/WHITE/BLUE is good enough and too many have fought for her. I don't like any changes to the flag.
Never thought if it that way. I’ve one for firefighters and was considering those for 1st responders and the military.

Every merchant very much appreciates the presence of a nearby police unit, when there is a long line of anxious buyers. When I used to work extra duty hours, on Black Fridays, every manager, from Ashley Furniture, to Target, to Circuit City, to, yes, Academy, wanted a marked police unit be to be there. And, In the case of those extra-duty assignments, they were disappointed when I could not stay longer, as there was a list of places to check, with a tracking system that a supervisor could use to make sure I was making each location.

This ammo situation is a bit different from Black Fridays, but many of the social dynamics are the same. Add the social dynamics of an elections season, and, well, any conscientious beat officer would try to make an appearance, if practicable.

Now retired, I am “out of the loop,” but have little doubt that officers have been urged to check potential hot spots, If not actually assigned to specific places/times.

I appreciate police presence at any crowded area. It’s probably never needed outside an Academy but it’s probably not needed anywhere. Until it is.

Any high-demand item, with a publicly-announced release date, can result in a strife-filled line, outside the door, awaiting opening time, or, a smash-and-grab burglary, before opening time. In this “interesting” time, ammo is such a product. Academy may not officially announce ammo delivery dates, but some folks have established sources of this information, via what corporate security would term “social engineering,”

Please, let’s not take this particular aspect, in a direction that would be off-topic.
