A couple of years or so ago, I examined a handgun-size safe at a gun store that I visit infrequently (due to its distance from my home), which was unlocked by a combination lock having three or four "mechanical" (not dependent on batteries) buttons you pushed (not a dial to be turned) to open. I'm interested in this lock configuration because I recently discovered that the 9-volt batteries in both safes I keep cabled inside of my two vehicles died after less than a year of storage. Too, most safes relying on batteries to open them have the batteries mounted in areas very difficult to access when replacing them.
Anybody know where I can get a couple of them? Thanks.

Please be aware that most 9V rechargeable batteries do not recharge to a full 9 volts. Some referenced above are 8.4 volts at full charge. I have seen some that are closer to 7,5 volts when fully charged. Some devices do not work well at less than 8 volts.

V-Line and Ft Knox seem to be the most common that use the Simplex lock. Not cheap, but they are something you'll be passing on to your kids. I have examples of both, I slightly prefer the Ft Knox due to it's more rounded corners, but I can't really say one is better than the other.
