30-30 Ammo

I'm feeling grateful about inheriting a nice old rifle yesterday. The OP also inherited a rifle but cannot find ammo for it.
So ...
I am fairly well stocked with 30-30. I am willing to share the inheritance joy by offering to send the OP a box of 30-30 for the cost of shipping. $10-$12 should cover it.

PM me and it's yours.

THERE IS A CONDITION - you have to post a picture of your inherited rifle.

Good on you waveski. I don't have a 30-30. I bought one back I. The late 80's. A mossberg pra472 with a headspace issue, took it back and hot a rem 742 308 that I traded for a mod 88 Winchester in 308.

I have been through a few ammo panics, oddly this is the first one where I cant seem to find hunting ammo. Usually the 22lr, 9mm, 40, 45, 223, etc is what's hard to find. I cant even find 7mm08 or 30 30 either. I'm glad I have what I "need" and dont shoot those cartridges often. I was looking for that really cheap PPU 7-08 stuff that could be had for $13/20 because I wanted to plink with my 7-08 but found that no 7mm08 ammo exists right now.

I lucked into some on clearance a while back and would gladly sell some for the 3.35 a box price:), seriously I can't believe some of the prices I've seen for ammo recently and the open spaces on the shelf. I looked yesterday at Academy and Walmart and found 1 box of 30-30 and 8 boxes of 30-06, 350 legend and 270 seamed to have the most. Good luck with your search.

I am seeing 30-30 ammo right now at auction going for over $4 a shell. Thats real basic ammo too.
Now I don't feel so bad about what I spent on my Weatherby ammo!

It’s not a 30-30 specific issue

right now there is NO ammo available through midwayusa.

they do not even have 30/06 or 270 in stock

Midway has all sorts of ammo right now. Just not the cheap or popular stuff. 10mm underwood is a dollar a round. Not terrible. LC xm80 7.62x51 is a dollar a round too. And last night they had 5.56 cheapish but at 1200 rounds for 700 bucks. But youve gotta have 700 bucks...

Well you snooze you lose I guess. looks like some bought up all the traded in 30-30 they had on their table at my LGS and checked Wal-Mart, they had almost all empty shelves except some .308 and .30-06. I'll just have to be stingy with what I have. Good thing I only have it as a plinker

30-30 ammo is seasonal. The stores stock up just before the fall hunting season. 30-30 is overwhelmingly used for deer hunting so it isn't in demand all year like rounds used for target shooting and defense.

Wow. I just pulled my 30-30 out after not using it for 25 yrs. I am considering hunting with it. Do you ammo that is 25-30 years old is good?

As long as you don't see any signs of corrosion or water damage I'd be confident with it... That said, it wouldn't hurt to take a few random rounds from your current supply to the range to verify they're still in working order... Ammo, properly stored, lasts a long, long time.

I bought a Marlin 336BL. I call it a poor man's guide gun. I love 30-30 and it does what I need. I do wish it came in 444 and 35 Remington wow what a short little blaster that would be.

I have a .35 Remington pump. I know that's really old rifle and ammo. It was my dad's.

There is a little 30-30 left on shelves here. I don't use mine to hunt, but I bought 2 boxes of Federal 150 grain a couple of months ago just to be sure. I have about a box and a half of Winchester 170 grain PowerPoint. This was my standard load, as it was readily available and less expensive than most. It is all gone, as are the more popular hunting rounds.

I started reloading 30-30 a month or so ago. If you can find components, it's not too difficult. My local store has plenty of large rifle primers and I've been stocking up on them anyway. My hand loads are plinking loads though, not much good for hunting.

Before I read this thread today I put together 40 with the Hornady 160 gr FTX over 35.4 gr Leverevolution powder, and 20 with a 150 gr Hornady RN and 37.5 gr Leverevolution.
After reading about the lack of even .30-30 on the shelves, I am sure glad I did.

Good luck with your search!

Stay safe.

Will be a whole lot longer on the ammo, reloading drought if Plugs wins come Nov 3rd. Lets call it a "nuclear winter" from HELL if he wins. If Trump prevails (which I believe) It will be late summer 2021 before some sort of normalcy and pricing get back on track.

I can pickup 30-30 most everywhere nearly every country store keeps it in stock.

There are going to be a lot of unhappy people as hunting season rapidly approaches.
Indeed, but I have enough factory ammo for .30-30, .35 Remington, and .308 to hunt for two or three years easy, not that I do much anymore, not to mention I reload, and have plenty of components in those calibers as well, but I'm an old Boy Scout who likes to be prepared, most folks just think they can buy what they need that day. That's not always true.

30-30 is a great caliber for all kinds of critters.

For such an old workhorse, it is quite versatile, especially for hand loaders. My 110 gr FMJ loads are intended to be a hot rodded plinker. I'd like to try some 125 or 110 gr hollow points for varmints. 150 to 170 are good deer/medium game loads. I've heard high praise for the 160 gr FTX and 170 gr Nosler Partition.

Are your FTX loads compressed? I stopped a little lower than you're charge to try to avoid it.

Two things- first, try Bass Pro. If they are like the BP around here, they stack their ammo by the brand, rather than the caliber, so they are likely to have some of what you want, if you are willing to search every brand they have, because there's no "30-30" section, on the shelves.
Second, just ask around, maybe a friend, co-worker, or relative has an extra box laying around, who knows ?

BP loading components for my T/C Pro Hunter .50 remain at regular pricing and are readily available. This rifle will chew the center out of a target at 100 yards; I have harvested many deer with it. I do not have a crystal ball, I may have to adapt.
