So far things have been hopping around the deer woods. I have never had so many bambis in my face. One afternoon I saw 14 deer and 13 were fawns. There has been a spike and 6 pt plus five or six fawns within 10-15 yards of me. I shot a yearling doe with my bow and yesterday took another doe with my Ruger 77/50 inline. She was about 40 yards and winded me. I rushed it because she was about to leave and took her a little too far back as she took a step. The 300 Barnes MZ took her through the liver. It looked like a buzzsaw went through it. She only went about 60 yards. Fell next to an old logging road and I could ride my little Yamaha right to her.

Arkansas has a Triple Trophy Award for deer taken with bow, blackpowder and modern gun. I made the comment that I had the 2 hard ones out of the way once and failed to get one with my rifle. Just shows that nothing is guaranteed.

That’s good to hear. It says a bunch about the predator population in addition to what you’ve mentioned.

I’d be thinking coyote hunting later this year, if you can winter hunt them in Arkansas.

My snake chaps are being delivered tomorrow, so I will finally get out to the lease to look around a bit. I have seen trailcam pics of deer from this year and last year that shows a healthy population, and some potential for size. I just want to get a chance to be me this year instead of being cooped up in the house for another season.

Doc Rock you got me a little worried. I know the Arapaho/Roosevelt NF had closed to entry and therefore hunting. I hunt west of the springs out by Lake George. As far as I know right now we're still good to go for 2nd season rifle opening on Saturday. I hope you don't know something I don't. Hopefully the storm coming in tomorrow will help.

They closed GMUs 29, 38, and 39. I was hunting 29. You should be safe unless the fires jump I70!

Went out for a little scouting yesterday. Starting to see some good buck sign. Lots of rubs and found a couple of scrapes. Probably covered 3 miles on my ATV and saw 24 with only one buck and he was small. Trail cameras are showing several bucks, but nothing big. There are a couple of culls though. One 6 point with a nice spread but no eye guards and small buck with a deformed right antler. Those two are on the hit list. There is one decent 9 point that needs another year but he sure is pretty.

There has to be a bunch of good bucks on this farm. I had 7 on camera last year after Christmas that had 4 shooters then. They should be dandies this year. Not sure where he came from but had a picture of a 150 class too. Haven't seen a sign of him since.

I've got several friends who were lucky to have a house left, so not having a deer season is the least of their worries. Lots of gmu's were totally burned. Some are still burning. Hope the coming storm will help. The Cameron Peak fire survived a 14" snow storm in September and it's still not contained.

Got a button buck with my Toyota while on the way to deer camp this morning.
Luckily it didn't damage my truck.

Saw a big doe in the road and slowed down to let her get out of the way. I called myself looking to see if any were behind her but didn't see one. Sped back up and this little guy came out of nowhere. I only had a split second and a car was approaching in the oncoming lane, so I just had to hit it.

Killed it instantly. Called Game and Fish and got a "road tag", (which really isn't a tag at all, they just take down your info and give you the green light to keep the deer) so I would be legal.
Pulled up to camp shortly after daybreak with a deer already in the bed.

Hate that a button buck was killed, but it's going to be mighty tender.

I have never seen so many fawns. I have had them in my face all week. Saw a really nice buck crossing a field twice. He comes out of the brush in the same place each time so I put a camera on it. I've shot a few of deer there the last three years. If he is on the camera a few more times the ladder stand will be up. Had a 150 class in the same area last year.

You only killed one deer. If it had been a doe, think about all the fawns down the line she could have had.
If low deer numbers in your area, antlerless w a button might make more sense.
If you have plenty of does, then yeah, let the buttons grow.

We have few does where I hunt. Of course the neighbors blast em anyway. Hard to justify hauling a doe out, in a 2K trailer behind a 45K pickup and saying since you bought the tag "bundle" for 65 bucks (instead of 3 specific tags at 25 each)........because its a money issue, you gotta bring home some meat.

Had a button and doe fawn within 10 yards Sat. Hunting recurve. Let em walk. Saw 3 medium does, and wasn't keen on zipping one. Bow is new to me, not been blooded. But I saw a 120" 8 pt the week before and figured that should be the recipient of the Cutthroat single bevel.

LOL, aint seen him since. But got rubs and scrapes. by my old gun stand tree.

Did not hunt this morning.
Back bothering me and I was still cold after dinner yesterday, when I only hunted 3 hrs in the AM.
I work 2nds so hunting and then work is pretty brutal.

Laying out til this weekend. Rain thurs and warmer thurs/fri.......but cooler Sat.
Should be primo.
