What do you do when you shoot a pheasant? Catch it!

That is dangerous. I know of two people who tried to catch birds and got speared through the hand by the bird's bill.

Best outcome, step to the side.

Ive not yet caught a dove I've shot.
Proly fumbled a half dozen.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Reminds me of the 1st dove shoot I took my son on when he was 10 or 12. He did much better than I expected taking several birds. But one that I shot was headed right for him. He caught it and claimed since he caught it he should claim it as his. Then as we were leaving I 1st unloaded my shotgun and swapped with him to unload his gun. Just as I picked up his shotgun a bird flew by in range and I instinctively shot it with his gun. Using his logic it was his bird since it was killed with his shotgun.

I don't recall exactly how many birds we each had, but those 2 birds caused his total to be more than mine. When we got home he bragged to his mom about killing more than me. I never told my wife any different.

I’ve bounced a dove off my stool before a few times. It’s Canada geese you have to be careful with. I dropped a 12 pound one at my feet when I was about 16 or so. There’s a lot of energy in a falling goose.

Lucky catch! What's the odds of catching a foul (fowl? LoL) baseball at the park. Mark that up 10000 X

I've had the dog bring back retrieved roosters, next thing you know. My hand is bleeding base of thumb. Bird on purpose or whatever, spur nicked me B4 the ringing.

Never caught one but had to duck once. An 8-ish lb capercaillie was about to hit me in the face at 30mph after I shot it. :what:

That could have been very unpleasant. I had some great capercaillie hunts in Sweden. Some jolly cold ones too.

When I was young I had a lab named Sarge. I used him to hunt birds, pheasants and such, but also rabbits. Got so excited when he saw a firearm. What a great dog he was, especially at fetching things. Never saw him catch one, and I have certainly never tried that myself.

When I was still a kid on the farm back home my dad had a Weimaraner that lived to hunt pheasants. He would sneak up on a bird under cover and fake he was rushing it and when the pheasant would fly up he would launch straight up and catch it in his mouth about 4' off the ground and then bring it back to Dad just as proud as could be.
Dad would be beaming and break the birds neck, stuff it in his game pocket in his coat and we would go find another one.
No bb holes, no feathers in the meat, and a lot times, no tooth marks.

Best bird dog I ever heard of. I know we would never fire a shot and some would say what fun is that, but we hunted for food so we were very happy with his abilities.
We raised Ringnecks for the state of PA for 15 years and shot a lot of them, but we never were in the position to catch one coming down.

The only time I ever caught a game bird was when a turkey flew into me on my motorcycle. It glided into my chest between my arms and started flapping me in the face.

I finally got ahold of it's neck and threw it off me.
I still don't know how I kept that bike on two wheels, Glad I was only going about 30 and no one was coming the other direction because I was all over the road.

I 'caught' a mallard drake my dad dropped-right in the chest! I quick grabbed it's neck and wrung it before it could counterattack. It hurt!

I don't know how you did either. I took a crow to the knee at 65, naturally my already bad knee, the right, and I had a hard time staying upright.

Shot the point of a V from kneeling, went and dumped the next going left and waa about to triple when #1 bashed into my hip.
Uses mynleftbhand to catch myself, pushed up and looked behind....still on knees and there was a honker laying across my legs twitching.

Pretty POd the dead bird ruined me getting a triple.

Did shoot one before that group, so had 3 in a row. Not the same as 3 on one pass.

The turkey was flying across the road and I drove into it. With the helmet on I couldn't see it coming until the last second, and I braced for it. Still almost took me off the back of my 650. Still hurt like hell and I had my visor up and it beat the hell out of me with his wings. I was wearing glasses and it saved my eyes so I could see to get stopped.
When I finally got the bird off of me and got the bike under control I drifted off the road and parked and sat for a while. I was very lucky that I got ahold of it's neck immediately and it was a small turkey.

Notice his muzzle got a bit low in the direction of his buddy after he caught the bird? He realized it and quickly raised it back up. It wasn't awful and it was only a split second but it's easy to get careless when you start doing tricks.

I only point this out because with my luck, get cute and stuff goes wrong.

About 25 years ago I was hunting with a friend, but no dog. We were walking through a cut down corn field, about five yards apart. A cock pheasant popped up about 3 yards ahead of, and almost exactly between the two of us. Both of us made a 45 degree turn and fired simultaneously. We saw feathers fly, and the bird dropped straight down. This was about 15 minutes after dawn, at the beginning of our day.

As we walked over, to the spot where the bird went down, we joked with one another as to whose bird it would be. However, we spent the next 30 minutes searching for it, and never found it. We didn't even find a hole that it might have crawled into. As luck would have it, we didn't see another bird the rest of the hunt.
