O.K. I'll start by saying my BS detector was pegged on high when I heard this. But I figured the source should be knowledgeable and am now questioning the statement.

My nephew is a US Army MP and I just saw him for the first time in forever (even though he's only a 10 hour drive away, he hasn't been able to get leave for 18 months and can't venture more than 60 miles off post since COVID broke).

So he tells me that he's turning in his M9 and getting re-trained on the M17 as soon as he gets back after the holidays.... sounds cool, I'm into it.

Then he goes on to tell me what a scam boondoggle SIG has worked out, as they are not only selling the army all of these M17s, but that they require "special 9mm ammo" so SIG gets to sell the army all new 9mm ammo.

OK... is this all screwed up or what? Special 9mm ammo??

:scrutiny::confused::uhoh:

Sig not only got the pistol contract, but the contract for ammo too. Nothing special about the ammo, just made to military specs which may be a little hotter than most civilian ammo.

And as an MP, he will be issued standard ball ammo.

That depends. Depending on the location they very often issue HP to MP's. Using HP in warfare is sort of a gray area, but if stationed in the USA they get HP ammo just the same as any other LE officer.

So Winchester got the ammo contract, and no, it's not standard NATO ball. See .455_Hunter's link to the article (which is old news now) above.

I believe we discussed, in detail, this very significant culture shift on the part of the military (not only going to 147-grain rounds, but standard issue of JHPs) at least four or five years ago ...

When the military originally announced the solicitation of bids for the new pistol contract they wanted proposals for a new more effective 9mm cartridge. By the time the plan was finalized that idea was dropped and the military wanted normal FMJ and hollow point ammo.

I hesitate to answer this, because I only know what I know and it's somewhat limited, however...

I'm an Army MP; currently serving in the Reserve, but I work full time for the Reserve so I track the ammo we get regularly.

We are (since relatively recently) getting issued DODIC A260 / M1153 (147 gr JHP) for Law & Order and Armed Guard duties. We still shoot DODIC A363 / M882 (115 gr FMJ) for qualification (just did in September). We can also get DODIC AB45 / M917A1 Inert cartridges (basically zap caps), and these are great for training weapons functions.

That's not to say that we won't get M1152, but we don't have the DODIC available to order it in my area yet... Also, know that I'm an MP who works in Ops; I'm not an Ordinance or Logistics guy. In other words, ammo is not my area of expertise. But, I do know that the ammo we can get our hands on has a great deal to do with what the Ammo Supply Point (ASP) can get in to be issued...
