Shoot both eyes open, practice more than once per year. I hit my buck 3 years ago at 30yrds at 18x, and hit him again running across me at at 35yrds as he rounded the bank of the pond... I shoot at 15-18x all year long, largely regardless of range. If I can do it, anyone can.
This. I run a 4.5-14x VX-III on my .25-06, my primary hungting rifle, have never had trouble finding an animal in the optic. I do back it off to lower magnification when walking around, though, only use higher settings for stabilized shots at greater ranges. If I need higher magnification, I'm not rushing.
