I'm trying to remove the magazine tube from a 590 Shockwave, but I'm not having any luck. I've tried heating it with a hair dryer assuming there is loctite on the threads. I don't have a torch but I tried a flame from something else to no avail. I tried a strap wrench after wrapping 2000 grit sandpaper around the tube to get some bite but nothing seems to work. It doesn't appear to have a pin anywhere. Any suggestions?

A propane torch is what you are going to need to get the mag tube off. It is secured with thread locker. Heat the bottom of the receiver where the tube goes through until you start to see bubbling at the joint, then unscrew with your strap wrench.

For crying out loud. How hot do you need to get the darn thing? I got it so hot that I couldn't touch it and it still will not budge. Now I'm afraid of ruining the finish or melting things that don't need to be melted.

A friend gave me his heat gun this time and they get much hotter than a hair dryer. So hot I couldn't touch the gun.

Did you read the part about heating it until you see bubbling?

A barrel vise and action wrench is what I use.

And a propane torch.

Heat guns get pretty darn hot but the heat transfer is different. It seems like it should still work. The aluminum receivers really dissipate the heat fast on those Mossberg.

SOP for seized threads:
-apply Kroil (or other light penetrating oil). Go away, come back tomorrow.
-apply Kroil, heat until the Kroil is just seething/bubbling/boiling out of the joint. I use a propane torch, a hairdryer won't cut it. You're boiling the Kroil into the joint.
-apply torque

And yes, square-profile threaded thin-wall tubes can be a bear! If it's Loctite that's resisting you, when you get enough heat, it'll unscrew so easily you'll wonder what the big ordeal was.

I thought I did see it liquefy but still can't get it to budge. What is Mossberg thinking making these so difficult to remove? It's not like they are going to fly apart. I thought this conversion was going to be fairly inexpensive, but if I have to go buy a bunch of tools (barrel vise, action wrench, torch, etc.) to do a one time job I'll just sell the silly thing.

Another question. If I ever get the mag tube off of the darn receiver I'm thinking about putting a Magpul forend on it. The Shockwave has a short tubed action so the Magpul will not work as is because it requires a long tubed action. If I get the Hogue forend adapter nut #05020 will that fix the problem? Thanks and I apologize for all of the questions. It's the first time getting this involved in changing a shotgun around.
