$1 Billion Ammo Backlog

Staggers the mind that any government would try and plug that economic niche, and that just one company producing firearm related goods.

My neighbor is a rep for Hornady among other companies. As of last month Hornady was backlogged 55,000,000 rounds of .223/5.56.

Vista owns Speer, Alliant powder, CCI, and Federal. Remington was a recent acquisition also.

Lots of components will be diverted to ammo manufactures like Federal. This is going to cut deep into the supply of bullets and primers.

Healthy is having a year's supply of ammo in your stash. Unhealthy is not knowing you needed a year's supply of ammo in your stash. By the time you know you needed ammo, you can't get any.

1 billion dollar back log...and that's just civilian orders? Holy Hannah. I think I will pick up knitting as a hobby while the industry recovers.

Anyone in the government acquisition field have any insight?

So a billion dollar backlog??? If that's going by today's prices, that probably only about 1k rounds lol. What's 22LR at now? $30 or $40 a round lol??

Im glad I picked up a welder. Gives me another hobby to tinker with, while waiting for everything to come back to normal.

Which I feel translates to we (the civilian public) are last.
Looks like the nightmare that has been 2020 may keep rolling well into the new year, in more ways than one.

This is what I do not understand, how Remington could go TU with their ammo line well respected and millions of dollars potential in orders and back orders. To hell with the guns, if they had never sold another they could have just made them as a hobby and sold ammo. I always thought they should give motorcycles (and boats) away for free but sign you to a service contract. The ammo truck provides door to door service, drops by every month and leaves your contract ammo and bills you monthly!

Time to dust off “Ol Fat Balls”, my .54 Caliber Hawkins flintlock.

A small moulde, source of heat, and ANY lead (though pure is preferred) from stick ones to fishing lures to battery’s, and you have bullets.

Black powder can be manufactured with garden store stump remover, charcoal, and sulphur.

The flint can literally be found lying on the ground and can be knapped into final shape.

The patch and grease can be made from any scrap cloth and any grease.

With the rate of fire of a muzzleloaders it’d be a million years before I’d run out of components.

You won't be around long enough to appreciate your muzzleloader if you need a good SA carbine for SD.

I won’t be around much longer anyway. Made it this far so that is one thing.

From what went on the last time around, when everyone was blaming the Border Patrol, et al, for the last shortage, it was my understanding from what a couple of the big name ammo makers were saying publicly in writing, was that the government contracts are a totally separate thing, and yearly civilian sales far out class them.

In other words, we are our own worst enemies here when this crap goes on, and you cant blame the government.

This time around, I think it was sort of a perfect storm, you had Covid, BLM, and the new panic that drove those sales, and then the usual suspects (gun people) who dont/wont plan ahead, running around screaming the sky is falling, and here we are. Same as it ever was, plus some.

Ive been through a number of these silly panics, and really never skipped a beat until this one. Im still getting bullets I ordered back in August and October coming it every few weeks, just got a couple thousand more 9mm and 45 in yesterday, and at basically pre panic prices too. Been getting [powder pretty regular without much issue either, but it has gone up in price a tad. Primers are the thing now. Even the place Ive always got them in the past is now out, and that's never happed in the 20 some odd years or so Ive been going there. Im down to about my last 10K, and will likely have to start slowing down a bit here, if I want to keep shooting on a weekly basis.

It would sure be nice, if people could figure out what the 7P's are, and live by them. There would be a lot less of this foolishness.

At present shooting levels, I probably only have 5 or 6 years worth of ammo stocked up! I better dig out all my components and get back into reloading!
