Just curious, for those who have done this: Is a Ruger American barrel swap essentially the same procedure as a Savage swap? Any differences, or special tools? Any notched barrel nuts out there?

Exactly the same procedure,l. if going to a new nut I'd just use a pile wrench to remove the stock nut. If wanting to reuse the nut, then you'd need to make a tool or file flats and use an adjustable wrench (or big open end, my 26mm fits pretty good on the flats I filed on my .300s nut).

There are a number of after market nuts available, as well as both nuted, and nutless barrels.
These guys make some nice stuff.

I'm thinking about going with Shaw shouldered barrels on my swap barrel build. Then I don't need to mess with nuts.

I'm actually gonna pull the .300s barrel again tomorrow and see if the win .270 barrel I have will fit and if the shanks close enough or if I'll have to modify it

What is the price range for a new barrel, and the required hardware and tooling? Seems to me that as good as those guns shoot out of the box (my 6.5 CM is sub MOA) and what they typically cost new ($400 range) why not just buy another RAR in the second caliber? Not to mention it would add another ready-to-go rifle to your inventory for backup, loaner, etc.

As far as cost, I just went through this on a Savage. $300 for a Criterion barrel and right at $100 for the action wrench and barrel nut tool.
Pretty sure you can do it for a little less with a Shaw or EABCO barrel. I think I've even seen some kits with barrel and tools.
So, yes, a new rifle (if your desired caliber is made) could be more economical. I was going for a little higher quality barrel than factory and taking my chances that it would shoot better.

The process of the barrel change does bring up these questions?

Is it going to be chambered in a cartridge that is not available from the factory?

Is the current barrel shot out?

Or is the barrel going to be a different contour / length than the standard rifle?

Or do you want a switch barrel?

We are gun guys sometimes it's just because we want to make something different?!?!?

Does the NSS savage action wrench work for the RAR?
