I built my 280AI back in June/July.I went in the opposite direction with mine, the Shilen barrel is factory varmint contour, and the assembled rifle, scope, sling and one loaded P-Mag weigh a total of 14 pounds.I wanted it set up to shoot steel at 1,000 yards and a sittin n watchin/beanfield deer rifle. It's at its best with 160-168 grain bullets, and IMR 7977 gives the best accuracy, usually in the upper 2's at best and the .5's at the worst for 5 shot groups. It also gives the best velocity,160's are right at 3,000 and 168's are at 2930 according to my chronograph.I had a 280 Rem. barrel on this action before,so I had plenty of brass and bullets. It's an awesome caliber choice, and yours is a beautiful rifle. Now I'm getting the urge to build one as light as I can.According to some of the local redneck ballistic experts, the 280 AI isn't too far behind that there new 6.5 Creedmoor that shoots flatter and just obliterates deer at 1400 yards in their econo Tasco scope equipped lazer beam bolt guns.Seriously, you have a great rifle in a great chambering.Deer season starts here this coming Monday, and I hope to try mine out.
