I have a TC Scout. It has a plain brass buttplate. I recall seeing another black powder rifle that had a buttplate with a little door on it that you opened to a little pocket to put extra percussion caps in. Does anyone know if those buttplates or some alternatives are available for a Scout? And if so, where to buy?

Its your standard generic hawken "patch box". It can be used to store patches or caps or whatever you want really. You can find them for sale on ebay and gun sale sites.

No, if you knew the model maybe you could find one on Numrich Gun Parts or eBay.

There are plenty of brand new buttplates that have trap doors for storage on eBay.
But they will require a lot of fitting to get any of them to work.
Go to eBay and enter these keywords into the eBay search box: buttplate with trap door

There's a lot of M1 Garand butt plates starting at $10.

Other buttplates with a trap door include Springfield Armory 1903, 1917 Enfield and Russian SKS.

The Colt SP1 and SP2 AR's had a trap door buttplate, one was metal and the other was plastic.
The hinged plastic buttplate is available as 2 separate parts from Apex Gun Parts, except for the hinge pin. --->>> https://www.apexgunparts.com/colt-ar-15-butt-plate-assembly-polymer-new.html

Here's another idea.
If you only secured your Scout buttplate with one screw by removing the other screw, the single screw may act like a hinge to allow the buttplate to swing to the side.
That would reveal a stock screw hole that can be used as a storage compartment.
The remaining screw could be swapped out for a longer one if needed, and maybe the other screw hole could have an L- shaped pin inserted [i.e. - an Allen wrench] that would be easy to remove by hand.
That would keep the buttplate from swinging to the side when you don't want it to.

To illustrate this, right now on eBay, there's both a TC Scout composite buttstock for sale for $75, and a walnut one for $95
Here's a photo of the walnut one showing the stock screw hole in the back of the buttstock.

If you don't want to go through the trouble of fitting a new buttplate, you can install a slip on recoil pad so that you can easily use the hole in the buttstock for storage.

Tourbon Leather has some really nice ones on eBay that are on special.
They come in different sizes and with different attachment methods such as with Spandex, Velcro or laces for a more secure and better fit.
There's more than one auction for them, so check out the seller's store and other items for sale.

Most cappers have a loop that can be used to attach a lanyard, and the lanyard can be worn around the neck.
Or wear a pouch around the neck containing some caps.

October Country sells a belt sheath for a capper, or a capper can be carried in a belt pouch. --->>> https://www.octobercountry.com/cash-capper-carrier/

Personally, I like the Tourban Leather buttpads and the one shown is only $21 with free shipping.
That particular one is size small but there are plenty of other models.
But many folks also carry a possibles bag with their muzzle loading items in it.
Good luck and welcome to the THR black powder forum!
Let us know how it works out.

I have several BP rifles with patch boxes on the side of the stock but so far I have never put any caps in one. I have a jag and a few patches in them. For carrying extra caps I have a capper on my shooting pouch strap and a tin of extra caps inside the pouch. If I have my rifle I have my pouch so I always have caps. And powder. And balls and patch material. Having caps doesn't do you any good unless you have all the other stuff to make a load.

I put the caps in my pocket, although I have heard from a few women I work with about how most women's pants either don't have pockets or the pockets are so tiny even a set of car keys won't fit.
So the ladies might have to search for pants with useful pockets, but the guys shouldn't need to worry about it.
