:scrutiny: From your quoted line, I think you're refering to THE BIG RED ONE, with Lee Marvin. BTW, the quote is "Der Krieg ist vorbei." ("The war is over.") It was spoken first at the beginning by a soldier with a WW1 pickelhaube type helmet who was lost in "no man's land," who was bayonet ed by Lee Marvin's character, who did not know it was past armistice.

Thanks for the link, and the reminder of that awesome musical opening -- best movie intro ever with them driving the captured German officer in the jeep back through enemy lines with that song blasting. (of course, I wasn't looking to get married when I saw the movie in a downtown movie house - don't have those anymore -- was only a freshman ...) RIP Telly Savalas & Carroll O'Connor

Here's one from a cheesy b-movie from the early 90s: (probably very obscure)

Main character: "I'm looking for a really big gun which holds a lot of bullets."

Gun salesman: "God bless you, young man."

MC: "I always wanted a gun..."

GC: "Is this what you had in mind? It's a 9mm Beretta. 15 in the clip, 1 in the pipe."

MC: :"Got one that holds more?"

GS: "No."

MC: "I'll take two."

I know it can't be this because the era is wrong, but it sounds a little like the dialogue in Taxi Driver (from what I remember.)
 
Kind of an obscure movie, but this line from the movie always struck me as interesting. The back story. A soldier is on trial in the American west during the Indian wars. During the trial the prosecutor is inferring an officer let the prisoner escape on purpose.

Speaking to the Jury:

"Lieutenant Cantrell, with a reputation as a dead shot with all weapons going back to his cadet days on the Hudson somehow misses with his service pistol at 50 yards. A miss mind you that allowed the prisoner to escape."

I know it's a movie, but the concept that making a shot at 50 yards at a man running away on horseback with a Colt SAA should be an easy shot always struck me as odd. Maybe for some, but that would be a lucky shot if I made it.

Hint. Lt. Cantrell is played by Jeffery Hunter.

"200 yards with a 45-60, with a trajectory like a rainbow? If I'd made that shot it would have been the best shot I ever made. And the dirtiest trick I ever done."

From a really good, under rated Western.

Way more obscure. Hint: the main character is played by Christian Slater.
The ridiculousness of the movie had him walking out of a San Francisco gunshop (when I lived in the Bay Area, there was only one gun store in S.F., in the Mission District) WITH his newly acquired firearms -- the SAME DAY.

I'm pretty sure that's Private Ryan, but I only saw it once, in the theaters, and haven't been able to bring myself to watch it again.
