I started loading .223 for an AR about a year ago. I bought some H335 and never looked back. I love that powder in .223!

Just before the big shortage hit I found an 8 lber of Benchmark for $150. I couldn't pass that price up for a powder that I'd read so much and heard so much good about, so I jumped in with both feet and bought 8 lbs.

I started loading with Nosler 50 gr SP and used the Nosler online load data. Starting load of 24.5 gr and Max load of 26.5 gr.

I started at 24.5 and shot 3 rounds. First thing I noticed was that the brass was too hot to handle! Wow, with H335 the brass is warm, but you can hang on to it no problem. These grouped poorly and velocity was around 2820 FPS. (16" barrel)

I shot various other charges with the same result, until I got up to the exact middle of the load data at 25.5 gr and I got a 2 of 3 pierced primers! Velocity on these rounds was about 2990 FPS. I'm using Winchester Small Rifle primers. I was using a mix of PMC and RP brass and I noted that the pierced primers were on the PMC brass while the one RP was fine.
I stopped shooting right there and I never did get a good group. I use the same bullet, brass, OAL and primer with H335 and they group very well.

I provided a lot of info there without really asking a specific question. I guess I would just like some comments and suggestions on where to go from here. Also it is your experience that Benchmark burns VERY hot?

Yeah, benchmark will warm up your brass. I didn't think it was any hotter than H335 but it's been a few years (at least) since I have used either for 223. I liked benchmark myself, gave me really good accuracy and decent velocity for plinking purposes and the occasional coyote. I want to say my accuracy node was somewhere around your starting load @ 24.5grs which put me somewhere in the 2850FPS range from a 16"-18" barrel. I've since moved onto a different powder but only because I wanted a spherical to run through my progressive, otherwise I'd probably still have some benchmark around.

I have tried some Benchmark, and have 4 or 5 pounds on hand, and have not found it to burn hotter than my usual loads with Ramshot TAC. It also has been shaded by TAC in the accuracy department.
As for your pierced primers, I have read that the Winchester small rifle primers have cups that are about 10% thinner than CCI-450, No. 41, or Remington 7 1/2 primers. So while they are supposedly better in high pressure loads than CCI-400 or Federal 205, they might be more susceptible to piercing than a thicker cup primer. After having had a bad experience with some Winchester Large Rifle primers years ago,I tend to avoid them in general and only use as a last resort.

That's funny. I preferred it in the 45-52 gr bullet range.

On the Original post.
If you went up and pierced primers early. Work down from your starting load.

Good to know. That makes it sound pretty versatile. I typically use ball powder for the smaller stuff.

Looking back through some of my notes, I got great results with 52 and 53 gr Sierras as well. Looks like it's very close to H335 on the burn rate charts.

In these times of limited availability of reloading components, you sometimes have to make do with what you can find.
