My first gun

Thanks everyone! I love our 10/22, it’s a fun gun to shoot! But I think we’ve already become gun people now as we have the 10/22, Ruger PC Carbine, Stoeger coach gun, and now the Mossberg Maverick 88. So now we have quite a selection for target shooting or home defense. Wish I would have gotten into the gun world sooner in life!

Oh oh, it sounds like somebody has gotten a bad case of "gunitis". I hope you have lots of fun with your "disease". :D:rofl:

cdahl383: I seldom did any shooting until age 52, in 2007. The only gun I owned is the 1950's Savage .22 LR. A miracle that it didn't partly rust up in the attic.

Some of us simply had distractions in life and weren't exposed to any gun discussions--or didn't pay attention to them-- when they could attract our attention.

One day you might acquire a 'true' German commercial P225 (not the US imitation) and P6, but they saw such little use that you seek an extra Sig P6, but with lots of external slide (carry) wear, so that you won't feel like "babying" it as much.
Only if you are demented does this happen.:scrutiny:o_O

My wife and I took our CPL course last Sunday. It was very informative. Got to shoot a Glock 17 at a target out 7 yards. Fun stuff! Have to fill out the paperwork and get fingerprints done now. We’re getting there. Looking around at different 9mm handguns now. Sig P365, Glock 43, Ruger EC9S, etc. Something on the smaller side that we can conceal carry.

Commission M1888 rifle cut down to short rifle length (probably) for the Turkish Forestry Service.

I am amused by / distressed by / interested in the "probably."

Is that one of those cases where you hope the ATF measures that barrel at room temperature rather than at 40°F below zero? ;)

The "probably" refers to the agency which caused it to be shortened, not the length itself.

"Short rifle" != "SBR". Short rifle is a technical term referring to a class of bolt action military rifles intermediate in length between carbines and long rifles. This includes the Lee Enfield #! MkIII, Lee Enfield #4 MkI/II, Kar98az, Kar98k, M1903 Springfield, and Arisaka Type 99.

My rifle was comfortably within the legal limits of the NFA34, and was in fact significantly longer than my also legal Commission Gew91. In any case, I haven't possessed that firearm for in excess of forty years.

Be sure both of you shoot any choices. Any of the above will feel MUCH different than a Glock 17. A Glock 26 is more like a 365 than the 43. Just a little fatter.

Went to the local indoor range today. First time shooting my guns at an indoor range. It was pretty cool.

Brought my .22 rifle and shotgun. Had a lot of fun! Definitely going back again soon!

Shot the .22 out at 50 yards and the shotgun between 7-15 yards. Firing slugs at the range was cool! Massive power!

Met another fellow new gun owner there and talked to him for a bit. He just got started in July whereas I got started in June. Was nice talking to someone else who just recently got into the gun world.

Well, I picked up another gun last week. This time a handgun. Ruger EC9S. Great price for a nice sub compact pistol.

Took it to the range and shot it for the first time. It was great! No issues at all, everything felt good. Practiced at 7-10 yards, got all my shots on target snd got just about all in the center bulls eye area as I got the hang of it more. Put about 125-150 rounds through it. Lots of fun to shoot!

Can’t wait to get my CPL so I can carry it. Looks like I’ve become an addict haha!

My wife bought me one as a gift in 1982 .I have had it 38 yrs and it is totally reliable. I have shot thousands of rounds with it.
In that time I once replaced the firing pin and couple of small parts .

Welcome - and as an ex-teacher let me say that the very most important thing is to be safe. If it boiled down to one rule I would say that the most important is to "never point your gun at anything you do not intend to shoot"... One mistake can cause a lifetime of misery and regret.

Have fun - I am sure more guns shooting are coming your way.

I agree. I’ve already taught my kids the gun safety rules. Our guns stay locked up, safeties on, magazines out, and action opened.

You are right! I started with the 10/22 back in June. Now I also have a Ruger PC Carbine, Stoeger 12 gauge coach gun, Mossberg Maverick 88 12 gauge security model, and now the Ruger EC9S handgun. I’ve also got a gun safe stocked with ammo and cleaning supplies.

I just started going to an indoor range nearby. Previously I was shooting at my buddy’s house outside on his property. Too cold now though. I may sign up for a membership at the indoor range. I went a couple times and it’s a lot of fun!

Haven’t logged on here in a while. Well I’ve definitely taken to guns over the past year or so. I go to the range a lot and shoot much more often now. Sure is fun!

Funny to go back and read my old posts now. Learned a lot in just a year and a half!
Excellent saga! I’m glad to see that you kept at it once you picked up the 10/22, and branched out in a few different directions.

Once you bring home a nice .38/.357 revolver you’ll really be in deep.

I see a GP 100 or a Model 66/686 in your future. Once that happens a reloading set up will soon follow. ;)

Keep us apprised of your adventures, I’m looking forward to see what’s next :).

Stay safe.

Haha funny you mention the revolver stuff. I just picked up a new GP100 yesterday! Can’t wait to shoot it!

Man, you jumped into the deep end with all your clothes on!

Excellent choice. Ruger makes a rugged and simple revolver that is accurate, is easy to shoot, clean and maintain, has a trigger system can be improved with some new springs and light polishing, and best of all will handle any sensible .357 Magnum load you can feed it.

You’ll really be hooked once you experience the range of ammo a revolver offers you ;). Better make room for some reloading gear .

Stay safe.

My advice to the OP is to give it a minute before you continue to build a collection. It takes a little time to figure out what kind of gun guy you are and where you want to be in the gun world. If it turns out you are an HK guy you are really going to be pissed you wasted HK money on Rugers ;)

I don’t understand what you’re saying. I’m just buying stuff that looks cool to me. How do you figure out what kind of gun guy you are? This is not a smart remark, just curious what you mean.

Went shooting with my wife at my buddy’s house a few weeks ago and loved it. He’s got his own range in the back of his property. First time ever firing a gun in my life. Shot his .22 rifle, AR15, 12 gauge, 20 gauge, and a couple 9mm handguns. Really liked the .22 rifle and so did my wife.

So we bought our first gun, a Ruger 10/22. I got a few extra 10 round magazines and a couple 25 round magazines, and lots of Remington and CCI ammo. Got a nice locking cabinet for our room so the kids can’t get to it.

Went back to my buddy’s house today and got to shoot it. What a great gun! I think we put over 300 rounds through it today haha! Not as good with open sights as I was with my buddy’s rifle with a scope, but still had fun regardless. Unloading the 25 round magazines was really cool!

Really learned how to handle the gun today. Loading ammo, loading and unloading the magazine in the gun, using the safety, bolt lock, etc. Had a couple malfunctions with the cheaper ammo but clearing that was very easy. My wife enjoyed shooting it as well and also learned how to load the ammo and everything else.

Going to order more CCI ammo for next time we go shooting! I need to look into a gun cleaning kit too. I have a few things but need some oil and stuff.

Anyway, it was a great day. We got to his house around 1pm and left at 5:30 or so. Had a lot of fun! Think I found myself a new hobby!

Awesome, a 10/22 was the second gun I bought. Good gun.

If you continue to buy guns on a semi-regular basis, you'll maybe find yourself beginning to gravitate toward certain guns. Whether it's a particular type, specific brand, niche, design, whatever. For a lot of us, our interests ebb and flow. Don't sweat it though. Some folks are happy with a little bit of everything, some aren't. Some are happy with one gun for each potential purpose, some like multiples. Some of us just can't pass up a good deal and/or feel the need to try to take in every stray we run across.
