Hi All-

I just started loading for rifle, so still figuring things out. I am trying to find a load that shoots MOA. I tried CFE .223 las week, and wasn't very happy with the results. I tried H322 today, and what a difference!. I bought the H322 because I emailed Hornady, and advised that I am trying to clone thier Frontier factory stuff, because it shoots better than any factory ammo in this gun.

They were actually very helpful, and advised to try the H322 because it's faster than the CFE. I think they nailed it.
I am blaming the flier on me. I was shooting a 3MOA red dot at 100 yds. Hornady 55gr w/c FMJ-BT, 1:9 twist, semi-auto, 7k rounds through the barrel.

The top target is H322, the bottom is CFE .223.

Varget is next week.

Your CFE charge weight is what I was running with 62 grain varmagedons. So I'm not surprised you had poor accuracy.
In my experience it likes to be run on the ragged edge of blowing primers.

These were the set of my six highest ladders.

I agree. Your gun didn't like that combo.
It can be mine blowing how one gun loves something. While another shotgun patterns with it
True. Also it's a pencil barrel which has had 7k rounds through it, many in temps from 105-115.

A floated carbon barrel is next for this one I think.

My MVP doesn't care for my 2nd's and blemished 55gr FMJ reloads. I Have run an entire pound of CFE223 and it is by far the cleanest rifle powder I have ever used. I think it is really intended for a longer barreled rifles (20 inch or more) my 24 inch one loves it with 55gr soft points. I don't remember what my load data was but it. I picked up 8lbs of IMR 4895 Surplus Powder and have been using it for a while.

What is the twist on your 24 inch barrel?

I was actually surprised at the carbon buildup from it. Not as much in the barrel, but in the bolt. Reminded me of Tula, odd.

1 in 9 I believe. In my experience it was super clean compared to this IMR4895 or the small amount of H322 I had. The Mossberg MVP is bolt action. I have not used it in an AR.

BTW, does anyone have a better grouping with these bullets, with semi-auto, with a different powder? I want to isolate variables.

Thanks.

I have experimented a good bit with CFE 223 in a few calibers. It’s really a bit slow burning except loaded max for 223, my opinion only. It’s a great 22-250, 7-08 powder.

if you are seeing which load groups the best at a 100 yrds do you have anything better than a 3 moa red dot that you can temporarily use, so you can aim with more precision. you are covering 3 inches of the target with your red dot. afterwards you can go back to your 3 moa dot once you know which is more consistent.

Yeah I know, looking at replacement scopes. I shoot extremely consistently, as it's easy with the Geisseley. Also I keep the dot on med-low., so I can actually see the bullseye in the center of the dot; it's quite accurate. Once I get a scope suited to this gun, I'll test around the Node to dial it in.

Here are two groups shot at the same target, both using those hornady 55g FMJ-BT w/c bullets and 24.6g of varget. BUT note that they were shot at only 50 yards. AR-15, 16" 1:7 barrel.

I'm fairly happy with the results of this load so far, although I've loaded (not yet tested) some of these bullets with BL-C(2) in hopes of finding a suitable plinking load so that I may save my Varget for higher quality heavier bullets like 69g SMKs. Varget has just been so hard to come by.

ETA: was using an eotech 512 for this.

Forgot, I use a 3x magnifier with the dot.

I've had good results with H322, better results with IMR4895 (however, it doesn't meter well) and comparable results (to IMR4895) with H335 and it meters as well as H322. I was using Speer 52gr bthp match bullets. Attached image was at 100 yards.

I found matching the size of the target to the dot for the distance I'm shooting helps tremendously.
Your eyes automatically center circles on each other.
Yes, once I discovered it, I shot that MOA group in about 10 seconds. Seems like autopilot.
