New York hunters

Where are all the gosh dang, gol dern, dad gum deer?!?
i think they're prowling at night and laying down during the day. Shot a spike Sunday, then the woods lit up movement, gunshots galore on 3 sides of me. I could tell that alot of the shots were at deer missed with the first. At one point it sounded like the poor deer were running the gauntlet. Whole lime of shots multiple shooters.

Pat probably won't make it out tomorrow. Miss is going to order the parts for my truck, may try and install some of them. Just put on 4 tires that weren't steel ice tires. You know cords showing.

I need to gety front end right first, but 235/65r18. We had 245/60r18's with decent tread that I don't care much about cause they were take offs, scuds...... Used to call them Italian racing tires, baldino's, but with steel showing and the season that's why they're ice tires.

That's a odd size, I'll ask my buddy if they got any at the shop he works

That's what's on the Nissan's there are a few others that use that size. The rogues are a smaller size. These came off of Ford edge I think.
My buddy just got a rogue so he keeps his eyes out for there sizes. That Hyundai we have sucks getting tired for, there's only like 5 to pick from and cheapest is over $800 a set. Thing only gets 10-11k per set to.

I got used to buying wholesale, for years I bought through the garage I worked in. Now I get that but have to pay taxes on any purchase. The price on her tires was retail plus tax, disposal fee and instalation. I naturally asked why I had to pay those fees when I wa mounting, balancing and disposing of the old tires. I got a lie that it was a state mandate, but pushed into its their policy.

Ya they like using them excuses, I've worked in shops where I could have got discounts but fire people are just stingy with money.

Yeah it does not take much for me been like that for about 20 yrs now. My SIL picked up lime disease a few yrs ago.
You need to get some Sawyer's Permethrin spray. Treat your clothing the day before per instructions on bottle and you're good to go for several weeks, even with several washings of clothing.
https://smile.amazon.com/s?k=sawyers+permethrin&i=instant-video&ref=nb_sb_noss
Available at Academy, Walmart and many other places, as well.

Having been plagued with tick problems every year, I found permethrin about 10 years ago and have not had a tick since, and I am primarily a predator hunter. Calling predators requires snuggling up tight to the brush for concealment and ticks were a severe problem, BS (before Sawyer's ;) ).

At one time, Academy was out of it for a period and I discovered concentrate at the Feed and Seed store (that was before Tractor Supply, but I'd bet they have both concentrate & dilute) and have mixed my own to same strength as Sawyer's with same results.

Enjoying you guys, hunting banter. Hope you all score that big 'un. How long does your season run?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Regards,
hps

Our season opened up this past weekend on Saturday and runs three weeks. I take a month off anf fly back to Upstate New York from Washington State for deer season and to visit family.
I shot a small doe a couple of days ago and it had ticks.
I had one jump on my neck and climbed up to my left ear. I tried squishing it and missed it. My brother killed it right before it went in side my ear canal.

Yesterday we went to Walton and picked Troy up at his fathers house and went to Mayhoods gun store in Norwich went back to my brothers and had a few beers. It was raining kind of heavy this morning when we got up at 6:30. It slowed way down so we went to Bumbs Creek State Forest and they dropped my off on the high road and I walked down through the woods to the lower road where Troy and my brother were sitting. Lots of deer sign and some good size deer rubs in the woods a lots of deer sign there just none to see.

Thanks for the link I'll check it out.

I usually hunt to fill the freezer, most if the family loves venison so I share. Only ever bagged 2 decent bucks a 10 pt about 20 yrs age and a 7 pt last season. Mostly shoot does. We have a high ratio of does to bucks here I'm not sure of exact figure, but I see about 10 to 1.

Thanks hps1 will check out. One property I can hunt now and then you can literally see them jumping, it's along the river with Sandy dirt they must really like it there lol.

You guys are gonna love permethrin. Terminix told me they use it for flea control; I'm sure stronger strength than Sawyer blend, which IIRC says active ingredients .5%, 99.5% inert. (If you mix your own, be sure to read a label as to mix, as it's been quite a while since I mixed up a gallon). The industrial grade has a small booklet which gives various strengths used in cattle barns, kennels, & spraying various animals. I've also bought Sawyers @ Cabelas' as well.

Sure would be hard to move quietly with all the leaves on the ground. Down here it's more mesquite twigs. Looks like the grandson is enjoying himself, HL.

Just got in from meeting our son at the ranch where I help with predator control and my wife packed a picnic "Thanksgiving dinner". My son went out in search of some venison, saw a couple of bucks that were either too big or too small to shoot while I made 2 dry stands calling coyotes.
On last stand, when I switched to coyote pup distress right after sundown, the brush lit up with one large pack about a mile SE and two or three singles that sounded like they were from 200 to 500 yards away.

A doe and two yearlings paid little attention to the pup distress, but spooked when the pack lit up. Shortly thereafter a herd of half dozen javelina wandered across the sendero, but if the coyotes came in to the call it was after dark. Sure felt good to get out again, though, even if I didn't see any predators. Been needing to check my jeep as last time I was able to get up was Jan. 24th due to Covid running rampant down here. (The ranch is in a county which has averaged over 700 new cases/day for about 10 days.)

I keep mothballs under hood to keep packrats from eating wiring and hoses and I was afraid of what I would find. Was pleasantly surprised that there was still a few mothballs left and everything was intact. I'm sure the cat tracks in the layer of dust on my hood is partially responsible for the lack of rodent activity (cook has a huge house cat which hangs out at the mess hall, but obviously ranges down to the pole barn from time to time).:) The jeep fired right up, in spite of 10 months of neglect.
Hopefully, it won't be that long until I get back.

Troy, that .308 BAR is beginning to step up to the plate in replacing my pet AR. Appreciate the tip.
Almost got my first triple with it in Jan., dropping two and either knocked one down or cracked a 110 close enough over his head to make him stumble to the ground (between 225 & 250 yds). He hit the ground at the shot but bounced right back up and got into the brush before I could get on him for follow up. Couldn't locate exact spot where he stood and found no blood, so could have been the latter??

You guys leave a few for seed, ya hear?

Regards,
hps
