Favorite revolver cartridges

My favorite revolver cartridge is the one I’m shooting today.

Generally, I do prefer the old cartridges that started life in and just after the black powder era. Currently, I load 45 Colt, 44 Special, 38 Special, 32 SWL, and 32-20 that fit that category. 44-40 and 38-40 are probably on the horizon.

Hi...
Usually my favorite is the one I am shooting at the moment.
I will try to make a list...
.41Magnum
.44Special
.45Colt
.44Magnum
.45AutoRim
.375SuperMag

I also shoot tons of .22Mag/LR, .357Magnum and .38Spl and just recently started shooting .357Maximum.

If I had to choose just one it would be the old Colt, simply because it is so versatile. I cannot think of another round which is capable of burrito gas loads with a round nose, as well as 325 grain LBT shapes at 1300 fps for dangerous game.

Having said that, I'm unlikely to ever again look at dangerous animals over the sights of a revolver, and the .44 Special speaks to me in a way no other cartridge does.

The .44mag was my first "real" pistol, so it's kind of a part of me. I had a "Rhom" .38spl before that, which miss-fired one out of every six shots. I used to shoot 50 rounds of .44spl every week, so I'm fond of the special also. And I'm a fan of the Charter Arms Bulldog.

But, I've always been a fan of the .38spl, and I think it's a better cartridge than most people give it credit for.

.357 is another that I don't think everyone fully appreciates. One could get by just fine with nothing but.

I've only had a .45 Colt for a few years....but what's not to like?

I shoot the .45 AutoRim in my Webley, so no critique there. (yes, I load it myself to Webley pressure) A 260 grain Webley bullet in a .45AR case looks very cool.

I also like the 7.62X38mm Nagant cartridge. Somewhat challenging to load, as it takes very little powder to produce top velocities. Have to be careful. And I'm a fan of the Nagant of course, as the "weird factor" is through the roof. Plus, she's provided me with a couple of grouse dinners. Can't beat that.

22, 38 spl, and 357
For myself the 38 is just one load, 2.7 grains of bullseye under a 148 lwc I’m my Smith 67. The 357 can be loaded from mild to wild and covers pretty much every use I can envision for it from a GP-100. The .22 is great for training, youth, plinking, providing food, and even defense.

41 magnum and 44 special are topping my list because i shoot them the most. I think the next revolver I bring home will be in 45 colt

I used .357 Magnum “In The Gravest Extreme,” in a contest in which there was “No Second Place Winner.” So, I reckon nothing else comes close, as being THE favorite. I also really like .45 Colt, .41 Magnum, .38 Special, .32 H&R, .32 S&W Long, and .22 LR.

“_In The Gravest Extreme_” is the title of a book written by Mas Ayoob.

“_No Second Place Winner_” is the title of a book written by the late, great Bill Jordan.

I retired my S&W Model 58, about 1990, as its parts were getting a bit loose, and I finally admitted to myself that I have K/L/GP100-length fingers, if shooting DA. I have had the itch to get a single-action sixgun, to continue shooting .41 Magnum.
