I understand, John...given my druthers, I buy long tailed shirts, t-shirts et al, and that works out ok for me. KY is an open carry state, which I don't participate in unless out in the field here at the farm, but I've noticed over the years, that my concern about allowing just the tip of my holster to show, is diminishing. For longer tubed handguns, I tuck the tip down into my right rear pants pocket...mostly with jeans...which seems to work out very well. I wear most of my holsters at the ~4:00 position so this "tucking in the pocket" works out pretty well when necessary.
Just another thought....on windy days, when wearing my usual long tailed shirts, the tails are occasionally whipped up, potentially exposing the gun/holster. To preclude that, I tuck the front of the tail on a button down shirt or jacket just the tip, under my belt at the 1:00 position. It looks like an oversight after a bathroom visit, but effectively blocks the 'view'. My draw movement is not compromised using this either, as I use the right hand cup method to sweep the concealing garment back and away, while positioning for a combat grip.
Bill Jordan had a photo sequence demonstrating that cup sweep move in his excellent, "No Second Place Winner" tome on LEO gun fighting. He served with my father in law in the Marine Corps and later in the Border Patrol down near Del Rio, McAllen & Roma...FIL was involved in Bill's vignette regarding the new agent's first night on the irrigation ditch bridge shooting...an interesting tale, and a rare look at the practicalities, loyalty and dedication of law enforcement as it once was.
But truth be told, as you point out, when reaching for a high item at the store a long tail is better, I tend to look like a teeny bopper with a short skirt trying to keep all her essentials covered...in my case, at 74, it's not an endearing sight some family members have opined!
BTW, thanx for your monitorship here an elsewhere...I find your commentary universally well thought out...
Best Regards, Rod
