Can you carry a full size pistol IWB?

I wish I had read that post before starting off buying IWB holsters a dozen years ago.

I've been carrying a Sig 320 in a Milt Sparks Versamax II for years. Compact (G19) frame with full-size barrel and slide.

Good points Rodfac.
Lastly, a good OWB holster allows you to get and maintain a firing grip on the gun BEFORE it comes out of the leather.
Yes! I should have mentioned that. IWB will make it harder to get a good grip on the gun before drawing, particularly if the holster has a sweat shield.
John suggests 6" is necessary to hide a gun when sitting or reaching...
It's a rule of thumb I've seen elsewhere. It seems to work out for me. If I'm going to the grocery store or for a quick trip where my activities are predictable, I can get away a shorter cover garment. But if I'm going to be out all day, sitting down, potentially bending over, squatting, etc. and especially reaching up, then I like to have every bit of that 6".

I understand, John...given my druthers, I buy long tailed shirts, t-shirts et al, and that works out ok for me. KY is an open carry state, which I don't participate in unless out in the field here at the farm, but I've noticed over the years, that my concern about allowing just the tip of my holster to show, is diminishing. For longer tubed handguns, I tuck the tip down into my right rear pants pocket...mostly with jeans...which seems to work out very well. I wear most of my holsters at the ~4:00 position so this "tucking in the pocket" works out pretty well when necessary.

Just another thought....on windy days, when wearing my usual long tailed shirts, the tails are occasionally whipped up, potentially exposing the gun/holster. To preclude that, I tuck the front of the tail on a button down shirt or jacket just the tip, under my belt at the 1:00 position. It looks like an oversight after a bathroom visit, but effectively blocks the 'view'. My draw movement is not compromised using this either, as I use the right hand cup method to sweep the concealing garment back and away, while positioning for a combat grip.

Bill Jordan had a photo sequence demonstrating that cup sweep move in his excellent, "No Second Place Winner" tome on LEO gun fighting. He served with my father in law in the Marine Corps and later in the Border Patrol down near Del Rio, McAllen & Roma...FIL was involved in Bill's vignette regarding the new agent's first night on the irrigation ditch bridge shooting...an interesting tale, and a rare look at the practicalities, loyalty and dedication of law enforcement as it once was.

But truth be told, as you point out, when reaching for a high item at the store a long tail is better, I tend to look like a teeny bopper with a short skirt trying to keep all her essentials covered...in my case, at 74, it's not an endearing sight some family members have opined!

BTW, thanx for your monitorship here an elsewhere...I find your commentary universally well thought out...

Best Regards, Rod

I tend not to care if I accidentally expose a firearm. Course my state allows for that.

Check out Lucas Botkin's channel on yt, it's called T. REX ARMS. His personality can rub people the wrong way, but he definitely has skills and knows his guns and gear. Anyway, point I'm getting at is he looks to be a 13year old 110lb soaking wet "kid" but he actually makes pretty nice holsters and gear and is a grown man. He routinely carries a full size Glock17 IWB every single day and somehow he easily conceals it even with snug fitting clothes. It honestly kind of trips me up. I dont understand how a kid half my size comfortably conceals a 17 without having to go a size up in T's and button downs.

I would buy one of his holsters if I didnt already have a nice Dale Fricke Nehemiah kydex IWB for my 19/17. Plus I don't think anything can knock the 43 out of my waist, it's the only 9mm I've carried that doesnt bother me one bit. It's like carrying my wallet or pocketknife.

You can certainly carry it IWB if you buy the right pants, belt, and holster.

I only carry full size guns OWB though.

I carry a full size 1911in a galco summer comfort. I find it comfortable (except on long car trips). Like most people will tell you with the proper set up carrying a full size gun os possible even comfortable. I read somewhere ( I think Clint Smith said it) carring a firearm is comforting not necessarily comfortable. Find what works for you.

Have, can, and shall continue to do so.

I didn't start doing it to make a point, it's just what I got used to when I started carrying and I have always been used to it. I have adjusted my wardrobe and holsters to make it work. So now when people tell me it's impossible, I gleefully show them it isn't. Admittedly, I use 1911s, and their slide is slimmer than many other options.

I use a Crossbreed Supertuck, and a Stealthgear IWB. But lately I have been using a Blade-Tech OWB. Even in summer because of the lockdown, I found myself just open-carrying at home OWB, and then throwing on a long t-shirt when I went out.
