Bad season continues

I have seen more deer than ever this year but still haven’t shot anything except hogs. This last weekend they seemed to be everywhere I turned.

That said, I have sat many a day, in the wind and cold, to see nothing. If it were always easy we would call it “killing” instead of “hunting”.

I've had good seasons and I have had bad ones. Broke my index finger on my right hand right before rut one year during bow season. Still went out with a release tied to my wrist. Had the DNR clear cut an area on public land one year where I had taken a buck every year for a decade. Took ten years before it was a good spot again. Lost the privilege to great hunting spots over the years as ownership and relations changed. Sometimes it happened right before a season opener. while always a bummer, I still had my health and the ability to make it to the woods, just had to find another woods. Some years good spots are just cold and some years I walk in an a dandy runs up to me before I get to stand. Some years the first Tom I work comes right in and I'm done before the sun is even fully up. Next year I work countless Toms only to hardly catch a glimpse. Funny, how it is the latter that teaches me the most and many time produces the best memories. Maybe because to me, it's about the hunt. Could be it's why they call it hunting. Folks over the last quarter century or so have gotten spoiled. Deer numbers in most area are up and opportunities increased. Instead of sitting in the cold for hours on a pail next to a tree with the hopes of seeing anything, we sit in heated deer blinds and pick which deer we want to shoot. For me many times, these are bucks I would have wet my pants to shoot when I was younger. Used to be there was always next year. At my age, I never know if there is going to be a next year. So just getting out means success. Several times over the last few years I have had my sights on a deer after deciding to take it, only to lower the gun/bow and let it walk because I don't want the season to end by using my tag. Again....bad season? No, just a joy to be out.

Have killed enough.
Six yrs went without punching a tag, since '85.
Half of those, by choice.

Yeah, I like to see deer, but something I'd like to put in the freezer.
Adult does and bucks.

Had the twin fawns by me several times.
Neighbors shot em.

Affluent spot, folks driving 50K pickups.
And they shoot the fawns.

I don't get it.

Well the bad luck continues.........quarantine til 13th.
Be darn lucky if I dodge the covid boolit.
Proly gonna end up sick.
And too weak after to finish the season.
Oh well.

Just hope my kid w health problems doesn't get it.

...if your state is issuing antlerless tags, then they intend to have fawns shot. Many folks that can afford 50K pickups don't have the good land to hunt, the experience or the patience to wait for anything else. If it's legal, what's your beef? IMHO, I'd rather have the neighbor shoot fawns as opposed to 1 1/2/2 1/2 year old bucks with good potential. The land only provides for X amount of animals and I'd rather have those deer that may be trophies next year walk. Who knows what that doe fawn or button buck will ever be in 3-4 years, if Ma Nature even allows them to live.

Just because the state says you can, doesn't mean you should.
My county just a few yrs ago was an 8 on bonus/antlerless.
Based on crash data or ?
Never been enough antlerless for that nonsense.
State revised and it dropped to 3 the next yr.
Still nonsense.
Sportsmen rallied and state started listening to county groups.
Boots on the ground, better info.
Now my county is a 2.
IMHO it should be a 1 on bonus.

Mind you, one can take an antlerless w MZ and two w bow.........and still not use a bonus tag.
Bonus tags are not county specific, were yrs ago, by drawing even.
I can buy a doe tag, and shoot one.........in any county that allows it (DNR properties often don't honor bonus tags).

My county has never been a deer mecca. Pockets are good.
It does fluctuate.

In my hunting area, there aren't enough does to take more than one (IMHO) regardless of weapon type/license.
If you want a deer, antlerless, shoot a button.
Thats one dead deer.
Killing a doe kills all the deer that would be from her too.

And these same clowns repeatedly say "hardly saw any deer, so shot this doe".

SMDH

The sportsmans groups and country groups are trying to get the word out.
But many just don't care.

I understand carrying capacity of the land, we have tons of ag.
And am along the river, so plenty of patchwork woods. Its not bad really.
But deer numbers are low and have been for a long while.
At least the 10 yrs Ive hunted it.

I have hunted other counties, back in the 80s and 90s where one could see dozens of different deer, a day on 40 acres.
Hell i saw 42 at one time............opening weekend of gun.
Record was 61 bumped from CRP when rabbit hunting.

Back then it was the joke, throw a rock and kill a 100" 8 point.
Numbers dropped in mid 90s and by 2005 it was still good, but a shadow of it's former self.
You might have 50 sightings, all year. If that many.

Of course some areas way better.
EHD hit my old good place and the new owner, who pays attention said it was bad.........for the next 5 yrs.

For deer numbers, 80s and 90s were it. Some big bucks then.
Do think w lesser numbers and shift in doe/buck ratio we (in general) are getting bigger bucks.

But nothing is without a price.

I like to see deer. Like to see mature deer.
Killing does, let alone fawn does..........doesn't help.
