I made a thread months ago about the mainspring breaking on my Cobra. They agreed to send me the lone part, but only if I voided my warranty as a result of self servicing. Anyways I got the part and successfully installed it. Suddenly I heard a loud pop while it was just sitting on the table. I grabbed it and it was locked up. I removed the side plate and the hook had broken off the hammer...under the tension of the new spring. I called Colt and set up a paid RMA. I shipped the gun off and waited for my invoice in the mail so I could pay for repairs.

Invoice never came so I called weeks later and it was in range testing. They had went ahead and did everything for free...regardless of the fact they could have charged me whatever and I'd have had to pay it. Either that or my expensive gun would be worth nothing. They even had it in writing where I previously agreed to void my warranty in exchange for the mainspring. I talked to them a week ago and it should be back to me this week.

Colt has their flaws but they did me a huge favor.

That’s good to hear. I’ve found that a lot of companies have strict-sounding policies, but that they often disregard those policies and just help customers out. I suspect they have those policies to fall back on if a customer is being a pain. In the gun industry, there are countless options for any given type of firearm. The surefire way to turn off a customer who own your products and may purchase more in the future is to treat them poorly. I think when it boils down to it, the good companies ask whether charging a customer for a $5 part is worth the possibility of him posting a negative review online, boycotting the brand, and buying another manufacturer’s product?

Good that they fixed it. But if I have this right, the mainspring at rest broke the HAMMER!?? :uhoh: What kind of world do we live in now?

Yes but to be fair, it was a BRAND NEW mainspring that should have probably been compressed some before just being forced into place, on a broken in hammer like I had done. They warned me that you can't really self service a Colt like other revolvers lol. I'm a believer now...

Nice to hear.

Is this a new gun that broke parts or an old one?

I’m not sure you need to be “fair” here. Presumably springs are wear/tear parts that will need to be replaced on handguns with use. Having a normal replacement part break a critical component shouldn’t be written off as just a “quirk” of a given brand. Glad Colt is making it right for you, but it definitely sounds like a manufacturing defect on their end.

The revolver definitely had some minor issues out of the box. Loose screws and a loose ejector rod. The timing was pretty off, but it ALWAYS locked up the rest of the way when pulling the trigger. Like any Colt with that style of action though, it was wearing into place over time. Took about 5,000 dry fires but it finally started locking up fully when slow cocked...but also put excessive wear on the mainspring, hammer, and whatever else would have broken next lol.

With all that said, everytime I'm at the range with my gun owner friends...everybody ALWAYS shoots this thing better than all their own handguns. None of them are even revolver guys like myself. It's just the perfect revolver for under $1,000.

Another cravat for Colt. A few years ago I arranged to drop off a Gold Cup at their plant in Connecticut. Traveling to Florida for the winter stay. The rear sights roll pin was working loose under fire the slide had side to side play and more often than not a spent case would bounce off my forehead or glasses. They corrected all, gratis and mailed it back to me at the Florida address. This Colt is a late 70’s product and had many thousands of target loads thru it at the time. Kudos to Colts service.

Void the warranty?

One year warranty?

Good Customer service??:uhoh:

Frankly my experience with new colt sucks, I could not get rid of my python quick enough.

I would not have voided the warranty, for the money these new guns cost and the problems being experienced I would say send it in..... I am unpopular I am told in all opinions regarding colt
