Howdy,

Do any of you all know of any lightweight gun oil you could suggest?

Primary use as lube & protectant.

My Remington 1100 likes its lube light. Can shhot low brass and no brass cheap and light shells if the lube is not heavy. Growing up that meant WD40. Later my preference was Rem Oil in an aerosol can. Hard to find Remoil lately and I am looking for a substitutes.

I am not wedded to gun-particular products. I use motor oil, auto grease, and ATF fluid on guns where they are effective.

Thanks for any pointers.

Have you tried Rem Oil? It works well, just doesn't seem to last as long as some.

MPro 7 oil is pretty thin as well. Good stuff.

(This in NOT the case lube)

After skeet sessions, I pull the (1100) barrel and spray down the exposed magazine tube/gas rings.
The crud literally melts off -- half a paper towel to clean the tube/rings/spray lightly once again and reassemble.
Shoot the 1100 WET when you can, but the One-Shot even dry-filmed seems to keep the crud from baking on to where it literally just wipes off

Remoil is getting tough to come by, aerosol or otherwise. MPro7 does not come in an aerosol, but I could find a pump sprayer for the right oil, no problem. Will add to the list for consideration.

Breakfree CLP doesn’t work?
I like breakfree CLP in lots of applications but it doesn't work as well as lighter oils in any Rem 1100 I have experience with. Breakfree CLP gets thicker in colder weather and I have seen it cause malfunctions in Rem 1100 and Beretta A400 semi-autos shooting lighter target loads. I am not talking carbon-gunked messes, but from the get-go or after only a few shells. Next visit, after removing the old lube and replacing with Remoil or WD40, they operated without a hitch.

I find uses for the following:
* Heavy: Synthetic greases & gear oil
* Medium: BF CLP, synth motor oil
* Light: Remoil, lemon oil, WD40

WD40, if left to itself for a long while, leaves behind an unpleasant film/gunk. Short term it works as a light lube & solvent. Lemon oil (of the sort used as furniture polish) works as a light lube & solvent and smells great. It evaporates pretty quickly, though, and leaves no protection behind after a few weeks.

Eezox & Oneshot:
Never considered a dry lube. Maybe I ought to.

You can get RemOil on Amazon as well as a plethora of other places, including Walmart
WD-40 is NOT a lubricant and tends to dry with a varnish-like residue

The OP is not the first person I have heard that has had a hard time finding Rem Oil lately. I have noticed the shelves bare of it lately, also.

This. Maybe something to do with the bankruptcy. Hope it comes on-line again soon.

Have you actually used WD40? Yes, it does provide lubrication and can be used as a lubricant. I have determined this via observation, use by my own self, and and after reading the label. The residue left behind after it dries out over a time I find objectionable such that I prefer lemon oil. At least no nasty residue left behind by lemon oil.

OTOH, do you have any lightweight oil you have found handy for use on guns?

I use RemOil, 3-n-1, LW motor oil, mineral oil, Hoppes, and a host of others ca be subbed for RemOil.
I use WD-40 as a solvent to loosen plastic wad residue in my shotgun barrels; I do not use it as a lubricant. I do use it also as it was intended, to displace water

I use whatever oil for the moment but for protectant I use Corrosion X HD. It's like a grease you spray wipe off. It is main used for marine products in saltwater, they have one for guns but I use the marine product.

Hornaday One Shot has become my "go to" light lubricant aerosol spray. I got hooked on this stuff. Its a decent quick cleaner and leaves a very thin protective, lube film. Its not a replacement for traditional gun oil, but I find myself using it often. I also like Eezox, that seems to have similar properties.

I use WD 40 around the house and in my garage, but never in my gun shop.

Read the MSDS here:

Not very nice stuff

Hexane is a significant constituent of gasoline. It is a colorless liquid, odorless when pure, and with boiling points approximately 69 °C (156 °F).
....
It is widely used as a cheap, relatively safe, largely unreactive, and easily evaporated non-polar solvent.
....
The acute toxicity of hexane is rather low. Inhalation of n-hexane at 5000 ppm for 10 minutes produces marked vertigo; 2500-1000 ppm for 12 hours produces drowsiness, fatigue, loss of appetite, and paresthesia in the distal extremities; 2500–5000 ppm produces muscle weakness, cold pulsation in the extremities, blurred vision, headache and anorexia.

In other words, don't snort it, drink it, or completely empty a can of it while in a closet hiding from your better half.
But it works so well and so quickly that you're effectively done in 10 seconds.
And like any messy cleaning, spray outside/wipe inside if req'd.

Common safety <--> Common sense

Yup I do the same with my shotguns. Makes clean up really easy. Plus they work a lot better in winter.

One of the stickies at the top of this forum was a pretty extensive evaluation of various lubes and cleaners. I didn't go back and reread it, but my recollection is that Hornady One Shot came out as one of, if not the, best.

Isn't that true with most things in life, what is best is generally not good for you? I bought a sugar free cherry pie recently (by mistake) that was practically unedible. Use it as directed and it probably won't shorten your life too much.

As I have been out & about since starting this thread, I have given some more thought to the issue and picked up some products that might meet my requirements. I did not stop into any gun stores and none of the hardware or general stores I entered had any of the products suggested upthread.

WD40 and Remoil Characteristics (Both work, but one leaves behind nasty residue and the other is scarce)
1. Both a lightweight oil product.
2. Both make lubrication claims
3. Both make protection from rust claims.
4. WD40 has penetrating properties.

Not really asking for much. Not clearing trenches or kicking down doors with my Rem 1100. No pheasants in a marine environment, either.

Liquid Wrench Penetrating Oil
Has a proprietary form of PTFE in it (Ceflon), requires shaking, and claims to lubricate. Lube oil and corrosion inhibitors on the content label. I used this to clean some shotguns. Weight of oil is light, somewhere between WD40 and Remoil. Decent cleaner/solvent. Not as aggressive as brake/carb cleaner and claims to be safe on paint, rubber, and plastic. Odor very mild and not bad at all. Leaves a light film like Remoil or WD40. I will keep an eye on it to see how long it sticks around in liquid form on the metal and how the shotgun works next time I shoot.

Blaster MultiMAX
"Premium Synthetic Muti-Use Lubricant" Claims to do it all. Also says to shake it before use, so I suspect some PTFE or some other insoluble solid or liquid component. I will try this after my trial of Liquid Wrench Penetrating Oil.

Liquid Wrench Workhorse Multi-Purpose Lube
Seems like a direct competitor to WD40.

SeaFoam Deep Creep
Another "penetrating lubricant."

They make ballistol in the pump bottles (like a trigger bottle of Lysol cleaner). Would that work?

Kano Kroil for most things. If it needs really light oil, use their Microil. Its used for delicate things like clocks, micrometers, etc. Though only their Kroil comes in aerosol.
Looked that up. May be just what the doctor ordered.

Lightweight oil in an aerosol - the options are almost endless. Walk down the lube isle at the hardware store and there are probably two dozen options.

I've used a lot of WD-40 in the past, nearly everything else you find at the store will lube better than WD-40.

I use a lot of Ballistol ( https://ballistol.com ) and it has replaced WD-40 for most things I used WD-40 for in the past. While I never used WD-40 on my guns, Ballistol is a nice CLP.

Also sitting on the shelf in my garage is a can of Amsoil MP ( https://www.amsoil.com/search/?text=mp&timezoneOffset=360 ) and a can of Super-Lube ( https://www.super-lube.com/multi-purpose-lubricant-with-syncolon-ptfe ), both are products that I consider superior to WD-40 as lubricants.

Ballistol, dupont multi use look like good candidates. And i already use a couple superlube greases. Will also try the amsoil.

Thanks.
