Thanks for all the replies! Right now the G48 and P225-A1 are top contenders.

A 96 Brigadier was my first ever pistol a looonng time ago. Actually thicker than the standard 92/96. I think you are thinking of a different Beretta model. I don't think they make a single stack 92 anymore.

As for the commander size 9mm 1911 etc, I have a Springfield EMP with the short barrel. I've thought of moving to the longer barrel, but the weight is a lot more than I would like. The G48 with a 4.2" barrel is listed as 20 ounces while the EMP Champion with the 4" barrel is 31 ounces.

Now the Sig P225-A1 is lighter than the G48 but also has a barrel that is 1" shorter. Looks like it's going to be the G48 for the win.

The Sig is likely going to be difficult to find as they are out of production and awesome. I really liked my 48.

The Beretta M1951/M951 was called the Brigadier. It was a single column pistol. It isn't made anymore, but is probably what entropy was referring to and not a 92/96 Brigadier.

Kahr T9 or CT9

Very interesting! Those are closely matched pistols for sure. The Kahr CT9 is a bit thinner and the same weight. Just found this new website, most of you already probably know it, but it's pretty cool the way you can instantly compare any two pistols:

Glock G48 vs Kahr CT9 size comparison | Handgun Hero

The Kahr specs are a bit more to my liking but they are really effectively the same. I'm going to give Glock the win because Glock. For the record, I used to hate Glocks and was 1911 guy all the way. I still prefer to shoot a 1911 for fun but too dang heavy for carry.

There's a LOT more to picking a gun than its size...

For sure! Owned a lot of pistols, carried a lot of pistols. I know what I want in terms of size, and Glock fits the bill in the other departments, no question. Size is important for this particular pistol, and it's the primary criteria for THIS ONE, in addition to 9mm, proven reliability, and all the rest. G48 it is.

That bears repeating.
Yes of course. But size is a principal criterion in my instance. I want 4"+ barrel length, light, and thin. Give me the best gun that meets those criteria and doesn't cost $$$. G48 looks like is suits. Others work for sure.

Care to expand beyond this if you have more to add? I'm curious.

Size and weight are important to all of us.

Trigger pull, slide racking effort, reliability, fit, ammunition capacity....

I happen to like having a grip safety.

I like Kahr's; I've owned something like eight or so, still have one I love. But the Shield Arms magazines for the G48 are a game-changer; it makes it a skinny G19, something us stubby-fingered folk have longed for for a long time.

Like JTQ said, I meant the M1952 Brigadier. The surplus outlets have some @$275 IIRC. It is a single stack pistol. The Egyptians coped it as the "Helwan". The M92 seires replacd the M1952.

Congrats on the G48; hard to go wrong with a Glock.

carnaby: I've not have enough years of handgun exposure (I'm 65--and this is recent for me) to answer.

But my first single-stack S&W 3rd Gen compact arrived at the store today. The ergos aren't that of my Walther P99 AS, but So Wot? The gun fits my slender, Gurly hands better than my Sig P6, CZ PCR, though it can't beat my Walther P99 'AS'--and it doesn't matter.

Except for the protruding mag, this 908 has almost identical dimensions of my German Sig P225 (US "versions" don't have chin proofmarks, test targets etc), but the 908's grip dimensions are noticeably thinner.

carnsby----------Now I see your later post.
Hope you enjoy the Glock or whichever gun you plan to bring into your warm, loving home.

Those 1951 Berettas flooding the market now are approx. 1" thick at their widest point thanks to the recessed frame-mounted safety. I found my steel-framed example very easy to carry, but there are some aluminum variants floating around now too.

There was also the M92C Type M which was a compact, single-stack 92, but they are VERY rare, expensive, and magazines are nigh impossible to find. I sold my 1st run Type M for a cool $1000 five years ago....
