Because I sometimes like to spend money on stupid stuff, I just got this Devil’s Edge short xiphos from Kult of Athena. The fact that I’m rereading The Lord of the Rings is purely coincidental, although for some reason I want to don a gray cloak and go sneaking around. Anyway, I took advantage of a sale they had going last week for 10% off on purchases over $100, so it was $108 + tax and shipping.

It’s a Greek-styled short sword, and it came quite sharp. The blade is 14” from the hilt to the tip; the cutting edges are 13.75”. Per KoA it should weigh 1 lb. 4.7 oz. It feels lively and should be able to hack, slice, or stab well.

The handle scales are made from bone. Originally, scabbards were made from wood covered with leather but this one came with a simple leather sheath that seems well made.

It has a full tang with the end peened over the pommel. The scales are pinned in place. I wear medium-sized gloves. The shape of the handle feels good to me and provides a secure grip. The swelled end servers to help lock it into your grip. I'm not sure how the bone scales would feel with wet hands.

They also sell a larger DE xiphos with a 19” blade with wood handle scales.

Next to my Smith & Wesson Model 15 for scale:

Paired with a buckler (small shield) it would make a pretty decent home defense weapon if you lived somewhere you couldn’t have a gun.

Looks like Sting from the trilogy, but lacks elvish detailing. I like the blade configuration, but the guard isn't my cup of tea. The swelled cross section is always going to make a good scabbard challenging. Very distinctive!

The center of balance is right about there, maybe a tad bit further from the hilt, but I didn't want to play around having a sharp sword balanced on my hand, lest it fall and remove parts I prefer to keep attached:

Almost certainly the former!

I visited KoA and handled this one last year. Inexpensive but well made, a fast fun short sword and that leaf shaped blade cuts above its weight class!

I'm a sucker for blades of all types. I picked up a devils edge model last year during their black Friday sale for around 50 bucks. Nice wood core scabbard and a heck of a chopper. I think it was the "single edged qama " .

Always been tempted by this model and that's a great price. But I have legacy arms /gen 2 "halfling sword " and a museum collection sting sword and it's too similar to justify!

For total cost /value I've been impressed by the cold steel gladius machete. It's actually a lot thicker than most stamped machetes and made of one continuous piece of carbon steel that will flex and stay sharp. The point is too fragile and it'll bend. But otherwise it reminds me a lot of an "off the rack" weapon. Basically a munitions grade sword for 40ish bucks.

Nice. Now take up your 8 footer and shield and get in the line. The Persians are massing.
