Because I sometimes like to spend money on stupid stuff, I just got this Devil’s Edge short xiphos from Kult of Athena. The fact that I’m rereading The Lord of the Rings is purely coincidental, although for some reason I want to don a gray cloak and go sneaking around. Anyway, I took advantage of a sale they had going last week for 10% off on purchases over $100, so it was $108 + tax and shipping.
It’s a Greek-styled short sword, and it came quite sharp. The blade is 14” from the hilt to the tip; the cutting edges are 13.75”. Per KoA it should weigh 1 lb. 4.7 oz. It feels lively and should be able to hack, slice, or stab well.
The handle scales are made from bone. Originally, scabbards were made from wood covered with leather but this one came with a simple leather sheath that seems well made.
It has a full tang with the end peened over the pommel. The scales are pinned in place. I wear medium-sized gloves. The shape of the handle feels good to me and provides a secure grip. The swelled end servers to help lock it into your grip. I'm not sure how the bone scales would feel with wet hands.
They also sell a larger DE xiphos with a 19” blade with wood handle scales.
Next to my Smith & Wesson Model 15 for scale:
Paired with a buckler (small shield) it would make a pretty decent home defense weapon if you lived somewhere you couldn’t have a gun.
