What are some known good brands of magazines that works for the mini 14
And is 20 or 30 round preferred
The last time I shot or owned a mini 14 was 25 years ago
Back then I used Ruger mags but I know a lot of choices are out there now

I tried pro-mag with mine, hit or miss. Some were ok some sucked. Ruger mags always worked flawlessly.

The consensus is Ruger mags. Me personally, I have 12 Thermold 30 rounders that have been flawless. Cheap from the Sportsman's Guide. I also have Thermold mags for AR-15 and M1a. I have read reviews that were not good, but they have always been 100% for me. Cheap enough that even if you get a bad one once in a while, just throw it away.

Ruger are always good to go. I have had good luck with pro-mag, but with the 10 rounders. I have always heard that their larger capacities were not as good. There might be some good reading on the perfectunion site. They are the forum for Mini's.

Ruger mags for me. People are always complaining that they are expensive, but most well made mags, except for AR ones are. How do I know? Recently bought some spares for my S&W 45 Shield and Ruger PCC....Ouch!

Ruger, only. There's no reason to go too cheap, "nickel and dime", if you actually want to evaluate a gun. I just bought a $75, 8-rd. OEM mag for my first S&W 908-simply to see how reliable the gun can could be.

A partly-torn, round, silver "State of Kentucky" sticker was on my old Mini 14 when I bought it in 2008 in west TN. This might have been carried in a prison, or with an LEO dept. in Kentucky.
The magazine (in 2008) was Not common in Mini 14s, because Ruger had not yet decided to produce OEM ("Ruger") mags for rifles sold in civilian gun stores. Long story.

My magazine had a perfect operation (min. 500 rds.---all-Russian ammo! Silver Bear!) and that must have been due to the fact that the mag. came with the rifle, which had been originally issued in an official capacity.

Even for my used Mini 30 in 2008, the OEM Ruger magazines were not Yet available. My Promag misfed about once every twenty rounds or so: stovepipe jams.

Buy once cry once. Ruger mags are the way to go. I like the 20's but wouldn't turn down 30's if they came around at a good price.

I have had good luck with Promag metal 20 round. Never tried the 10 round. Larger than 20 was flaky. But the promag 20s in my box work every bit as good as Ruger mags.

Ruger mags for me. I only have a few and I take care of them and the carbine. If I wanted lots of mags to use hard (or abuse) I'd buy an AR and a bunch of P-mags. That's not very helpful, I know, but the common aftermarket mags for the Mini just don't seem to work based on my experience.

I have Three(3) flawless, Tried-n-True Mini-14 Mags that I use in bulk.

- RUGER OEM 5-round.
- RUGER OEM 10-round.
- RUGER OEM 20-round.

Simple.

Thanks for all the replys seems like it has not changed in 20 plus years since I had a mini , the Ruger mags are still preferred ,

In my very early Series-180 (one of the first few hundred to hit the market), I have no problems with factory 5 and 20 rounds mags. However, the factory 10 rounders jam in the mag well something fierce.

Guys on the perfect union forum, we’re having great luck with the straight mags that CDNN was selling. Liked how it looked like a M14! Lol

I’ve had good luck with the Gen 2 Tapco 30 rounders. They don’t always hold open on the last shot but other than that they’ve been 100% for me.

I have some old steel 30 & 40 rounders that run 100%, but I am not sure of the brand, Precision I think, but I also think they have been out of production a long time. Mini 14 Mag Pic 1.jpg

I've got 2 that look just like that, Walkalong. No mfg mark anywhere on them. I bought them at a gunshow decades ago. They have always worked well and I liked how they complimented the stainless barrel
