Yup. “Honey I spent $7 at TJ Maxx on some new kitchen spatulas since ours were falling apart” -like it’s a bad thing and she feels guilty for recklessly squandering 7 whole dollars without a discussion in committee. I mean, it’s definitely preferable to what I hear some men have to face: “honey I spent $1200 on a salon visit, and a new handbag, and a dress, just because!” ....but it does make it a wee bit difficult when that box of AR mags or that awesome Russian coat from Sportsman’s Guide shows up on the front porch, still less a highly visible new long gun. Luckily I have gotten very good at sneaking the things in, and she mostly tolerates my hobby ....as long as she’s not face to face with the invoices.
 
My reward to me for quitting smoking was keeping the money formerly spent on smokes. Even without any allowance for the price/tax increase over the 30 years I've been quit, it still turns into some pretty nice gun money.
A local shop has a sign to the effect "For $4.95, we will make a receipt in the amount you told your wife that the gun cost."

I quit a year and a half ago after almost forty years of smoking. After I had several heart attacks, angioplasty and four stents, not quitting seemed like a bad idea. The smoke money savings has paid for a couple of guns and a nice vacation.
 
We pool the majority of our money for household needs/savings etc. We each keep a small piece of our paychecks for spending money along with any money we make on the side.

I don't bug her about the new purse or bowling ball and she doesn't bug me (mostly, lol) when a new tp me gun or accessory comes throught the door. If things get tight (very rare) we throw our mad money into the pot.

My wife is not a gun person and thinks I am crazy for owning so many, right up until something goes bump in the night. Then it's "Do you have a gun on you? I think there is a bear out there!".
 
I can't purchase one till she gets one, it's her turn. I'm thinking of a sharps 45-70 for me, but the wife told me she thinks her 06 Browning A-bolt with the boss is to heavy so I'm looking at 270's thinking she is talking about recoil. She says it's weight. well we will just have to get two straight away then.
 
I have a small 'garage' business, separate account that I manage. My gun stuff comes out of that. I asked her about a year ago(pre covid/pre election) if she would like to go shooting with me and our 2 adult sons..'Rather clean the toilet'..but now..altho she is not a gun person in any way, recognizes the utility of having HD guns, didn't bat an eye when I bought a G26 and Mossberg MVP and when I(recently) bought a new Glock 48.

My wife ended up deciding on a nicely customized US 1896 "Krag" carbine with Lyman sights and a Herter's walnut stock in .30US (.30-40) for her "do anything" rifle. For long range, she has a dead-stock Kar98K which she handles well and can hit anything inside of 300 yards with. She doesn't shoot rifles very often but just seems to have a natural knack with them. I'm still amazed when she can just pick up a rifle, point it and hit the steel at 300 yards, cold. Weight is an issue due to her smaller stature. The Krag is less then 6 pounds, loaded and she benches or uses a rest for the Kar98K. She went through training at Parris Island, so she's nobody's buttercup. ;)

Something is seriously wrong with your wife. Apparently she was shorted on DNA as it's in a woman's genes to spend money. Take her to a doctor and get that trait cured immediately. She will thank you for it even if it does leave you broke. :D:D

There are a very few things she doesn't seem to have a problem spending money on. Laundry machines. She'll buy the fanciest whiz bang washer and dryers that text you when your laundry's done. I'm not allowed to do laundry so I have no say.

It was her that picked out the RV...... $87,000!!!! HOLY CRAP!!! But normal chic stuff like clothes and shoes and handbags she's just not into. She likes interior decorating but she only gets a thrill if it looks good and it was cheap. It's the thrill of the hunt with a cost component.

I don't have to ask permission to buy a gun, but I do have to self-report. She asked me once how much ammo we had. The she asked if that was "prepper" level. I explained that while we did not have a "prepper" level of loaded ammo we had beyond that in components and tooling. For some reason she's fine with me buying all the ammo/components I want. She had me order a couple of cases of 20ga buckshot for her shotgun back when it was plentiful.

Sounds to me like you picked a winner.

What’s “prepper level “ and how do I know when I’ve got there? I only had 1000 standard small pistol primers on hand when the buying sprees hit. Kind of caught me by surprise to be honest. I was expecting another two or three weeks before reloading components took a hit.

A few years ago our old washing machine ground to a halt---literally. It had been making crunching noises for months and one day it just got louder and louded and then shut up and that was it. I went to buy a new washing machine with her and found out when in the store that what we were after was a matching washer and dryer. :( I pointed out some machines that were perfectly capable of doing what we needed.. It was pointed out to me that I didn't do the washing and drying but I could do so and pick the appliances I wanted. I shut up and went off and admired TVs while she picked what she wanted. They are a pretty red color, sit on pedestals that store stuff, do a very good job of what were designed for, and left me gasping for breath when I saw what they cost. Fast forward a few years and we remodeled the kitchen. I got to pick the color of the granite countertops. She said her kitchen, her choice of new appliances. It was the same as the clothes washing stuff but I got to save money by doing all the remodeling except for setting the countertops in place. O, joy. On the plus side side she never says a word about what gun or accessories I buy.

I bought a $1200 sex robot and didn’t ask anyone.

I store it in the closet when not in use. This one still talks back though. I should have spent the extra $300 for the subservient model.

I totally empathize with you married fellas. Unity brothers!!!

I have to be very careful bringing new gun into the house so she doesn't see it.. I've lost some really nice ones that way. Although I have to say, I've gotten some pretty nice ones for birthdays and Christmas.:):D

Prepper level is when you have enough for the rest of your life and enough for the neighbors around you but in your mind you are only half way there. Thats Prepper level.
 
I've got maybe the worst incident of true cost to own toys. Though not a gun, I bought a $1200 Minnkota trolling motor and my wife bicthed and moaned for months - used it as ammo. The only thing that shut her up was agreeing to spend $10k on new kitchen cabinets. No joke, "will you shut up about the Minnkota if I agree to these cabinets?". Never heard another word!

This was 20 years ago and since divorced! New-ish wife and I have separate money followed sort of loosly and I like that much better for more than the obvious. I can smile look the other way and when she buys her girl stuff - fair is fair. :)
 
My wife will let me purchase, but reminds me of other thing coming down the pipe, big payments and the such. Gun stuff she wants her turn as we agreed that if i got one she would or get equal price thing. I did not bargain on her being so cheap. but I must say she lets me get the machines in the wood shop too. just as pricey.

we raise Jacob sheep and working on making a brand of wool for spinning and I have found out how much these women will spend on the tools, wool, and yarn. you are so right Sr.
