With the current primer shortage,
Is it OK to use small pistol primers rather than the small pistol magnum primers?
I'd be using universal or titegroup powder.

Is there any problem using universal or titegroup with the magnum primers?
I have quite a few large pistol magnum primers, and was planning on loading some 44 magnum and 44 specials.

I use now and have used for many years magnum primers in all of my handgun loads both small and large and have seen very little difference in velocities from light charges of Bullseye to Max Loads of 2400. I've seen more variance in velocity from brand to brand than I have from standard to magnum.

You could use magnum primers with Universal and Titegroup but you should back off the load a bit and work it back up to the performance you had.

From the published, reputable data you are using, the bottom end of the data would be a good place to start.

Magnum primers could increase the pressure for a particular load over using a standard primer.

Some folks do not see a difference or much a difference in velocity between using standard or magnum primers. Just do not assume that happens with all powder/primer combinations.

Take care.

I had no need for SPPs so never stocked up. Recently purchased a 686 38/357 and had no brass bullets or spps. Found all but the primers so I improvised and used SRPs which I have plenty of. H110 in the 357 and bullseye in the 38. No problems and good accuracy after I found the right combo.

The only powder I use SPM primers in for my 357 is HS-6. All other powders I use SP primers, HP-38, Bullseye, Power Pistol, AA#5,7.

For the sake of science, you should experiment. I've been unable to demonstrate a benefit (or any difference) with SPMagnum vs SPnon-mag, in either velocity or accuracy, with max charges of H110 in .357Mag.

Maybe there's a difference in colder weather, but I didn't find one in temperate weather.

The online Hodgdon data for .357 mag is with magnum primers if you need some data for mag primers.

The only time I use magnum primers is with WW296 or H110. Standard primers have always worked well for me with the other powders that I use.

Elmer Keith questioned the use of magnum primers with 2400! He use standard primers with that powder. H110/296 is another story.

in 357 mag i use small pistol standard, mag, and small rifle primers with titegroup. never had any problems and use the same powder drop for all. mag and rifle give me about 12 fps over standard primers.

Hodgdon's data really stinks.
They use magnum primers when it's not necessary, and the use a 10" non-vented test barrel, which give you no idea of real world velocities in a revolver.
