FN five seven VS Springfield XDM 9mm

FN is a quality gun. The Ruger, is, a Ruger. A range gun, from a company that makes fine range toys, but nothing anyone ought to take too seriously. And the comparison was between the FN Five Seven, and a Springfield. Yes, a Springfield.

A cursory search of your posting history shows me that this is the remarkably unqualified opinion of a Five-seveN owner who wants to argue with a professional gunsmith about the product quality of the largest gunmaker in the United States.

I'm no Ruger fan boy, but they didn't get to where they are by putting out junk guns.

the 5.7 ammo MAY get a bump in popularity now that Ruger has released a new gun that shoots it. I suppose time will tell. As others have mentioned above, it seems to be a great gun.

As far as practicality, the intent of the 5.7 was to run green-tip AP bullets, which are not available to the general public. I have the 22 TCM, but I don't carry that defensively. (It was bundled with the 9mm I bought.) It runs a 40 gr hollow-point at 2,000 fps from a 5" barrel, nice loud boom and fireball. Turns jackrabbits into a fine pink mist. I had to get a better extractor and have it tuned, it runs the 9mm flawlessly, it runs the TCM ok, which works for my needs. I have bought the components to reload the TCM, but I haven't tried it yet.

It seems that you guy's have not sent 300 grain SWC's down range from a Super Redhawk!
Yeh range toys

From your post, I'd say XDM. It's a very odd comparison though:

One is a best-in-class concealable tool for defeating threats with soft armor. It's especially expensive for a handgun, and expensive to feed.

The other is a serviceable middle-of-the-pack 9mm that would meet the needs of many concealed carriers for SD.

FN makes great quality guns. The 5.7 is right up there. When I first started shooting it a box of 50 rounds could be had for $19. Now they are up to $50 a box. Beyond my capabilities to reload. Had a 30 round magazine that fit the gun - and I could still carry it on my belt. A great "bug out" gun in my opinion - AR light so to speak. With a 150 yard range in a pistol you can touch the other guy before he even gets close.... Accuracy at those longer ranges was a problem for me. (older eyes - no optics)

But, all in all, a niche gun and kind of impractical. Figure on at least least $1,200 for a new one.

That’s where 50’s start, friend...

And they don’t need to penetrate the armor to stop the heart.

But, the 5.7 can do that, penetrating the heart through the armor, thirty times.:)

I guess the other choice is some milquetoast, plastic 9mm something?
Not that one...:D

I have both the FN and the Ruger in 5.7x28, but plenty of handguns in other calibers. Like the .22 Jet, lots of mussle blast and probably throat erosion, but then I do not shoot these much. I bought them just to own them and although I do reload for this round, it takes time and care.

I have an aquaintance who owns a 5.7 FN and he greatly exaggerates this rounds capabilities. Reminds me of people who compare 10mm to 44 Magnum, or something of the sort. He said something like the 5.7 has the same ballistics as a 5.56 rifle round at 100 yds. I just nodded and bit my lip on that nonsense.

I've seen a local listing for the 57 at $1.00 per round!
Lucky Gunner has .380 ACP at $1.00 per round (plus shipping and taxes). And it comes and goes as people buy it. Finding 5.7 at that price is actually cheap.

The one I'm interested is Kel Tec's kinda-but-not Five-Seven pistol in 22 WMR. Still a lightweight, super high capacity 22 handgun, but one you can find ammo for.

I just got some .380 ACP for free from TargetSportsUSA. It pays to be a Premium member there. Got my last batch of 5.7 from them too, but they are out of it now.
