You had on On Duty? More details please. I have never seen one of these in the flesh but they were all over the magazines at the time. No shops I went to ever got any in. I did look for them. There was no gunbroker back then. I am not an AMT basher but I admit they can be tough to get running sometimes. It all depends on the gun.

anyways... please tell me about your experience with the On Duty.
Here’s an old thread on it. Pretty clunky gun

Sorry, AMT/ Irwindale Arms was made famous by this guy and this gun in 1983.

Naaaaa Travis Morgan of Warlord Comic fame beat that upstart Callahan by 7 years. Typical story Morgan flies his SR-71 to the inner center of the world crashes and fights dinosaurs and ruffians with his AMT automag.. Dirty Harry was just playing catch up..

I have a 45 DAO backup that I've never got to work right. On firing standard loads or light loads the slide would go back so far that the rear of the barrel would lock against the locking bar in the slide that locks the barrel when in battery. This requires disassembly to unlock. I've replaced the recoil spring 4 times and even used a wolff spring and the problem returns in one or two rounds.

Hey Jeepnik (I've an 'O4 TJ, BTW), how does the Backup work; is it locked breech in some fashion?
I think I owned or shot the Backup; seem to recall it being straight blowback, and rappy to shoot.
Thnx,
Moon

The action is described as a short recoil. But it doesn't have a tilt barrel like the 1911 types.

Being a big fan of AMTs regardless their varied reputations, I'm surprised by the On Duty.

I've never seen nor heard of it till now though that seems explainable as an out-the-door flop.

Todd.

I had the AMT 380 many years ago.

A friend of mine carried the AMT 45 back up as an off duty gun.

He said after he qualified with it, his right arm was numb up to the elbow.

.

When i hear AMT i think of the AMT 45 back up. I never shot one but new a gun shop owner that carried one in his pocket and he could outshoot most people with full size guns, i saw that demonstrated in a class i took from him. That gun had a reputation as being reliable but was noteworthy for having a 20lb trigger. I think it had a simple trench sight if i remember correctly. ( might be wrong that part )

I got one of the AMT backup 45's back in the day. You're right about the trigger; it was one tough pull. Just couldn't warm up to it so I traded it off. Best as I can remember, mine wasn't very reliable either.
