Hi everyone, I’m looking for suggestions on a “shake awake” red dot.

I currently keep a Ruger PC carbine as my home defense gun along with a Primary Arms MD-ADS red dot.

My plan is to mount the MD-ADS on my Ruger MKII and purchase some type of shake awake red dot for the PC carbine.

I figure this would be ideal for a home defense carbine. As soon as a pick up the gun the red dot should turn on automatically.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good shake awake red dot to look into?

Thanks,

Dan

I had a SIG Romeo on my M1 carbine and the Chinese thing junked out on me in the desert one time shortly after getting it.

I got rid of it and bought an Aimpoint H2.

Tremendously superior and top tier ruggedness and reliability. Ridiculously long 5+ year battery life. Turn it on and leave it on. No shaking necessary. Expensive, but there are none finer made on planet Earth.

Sig Romeo 5 would probably be my choice for an inexpensive shake awake.

In the same price range, the Primary Arms Advanced Micro Dot is basically an upgraded version of what you have now and sports a 50,000 hour claimed battery life when left on at the middle setting (I think its the middle setting, at least). Its not shake awake but accomplishes the same goal of not having to replace batteries often and also not having to turn it on and off.

I had a similar experience early on trying red dots out. Bought my first Aimpoint and never looked back. And that was the old M2's/ML2's almost 20 years ago.

Been using them on a regular basis ever since and never shut them off, just change the batteries once a year. Some of the current Aimpoints are half the size and have almost ten times the battery life.

Buy once cry once.

I can’t comment on the “shake awake” red dots, but I strongly suggest the Aimpoint Pro for a bedside carbine.

I get 3-4 years from a single battery. It’s always on, and it has held the original
zero on my Daniels Defense AR since it was mounted in 2012.

I have other red dots, although I honestly don’t know why.

I've been using several of the SIG red dots with that feature and so far, I like it.

If it was made in China, it was the lowest possible tier of SIG red dot. Most are made in the Philippines or the US.

I like the Mepro Tru Dot RDS. Slightly civilian version of issue optic in many countries. Only shake awake that works 100% I know of. Great dot shape for my bad eyes. Available under $400 if you look. Change the battery yearly to make sure it's live anyway. Easy to find/change AA battery.

Aimpoint PRO is a good deal, dead reliable, change battery yearly to be sure though it'll go 2-3 years probably.

Aimpoint M4/5 are crazy pricey but batteries last over FIVE years. That's why Aimpoint has no extra features like shake awake; they just keep improving tech to reduce power consumption. This is a general trend for well designed products; I just bought smoke detectors with 10 year batteries sealed inside the unit (by which time the whole thing needs to be replaced anyway).

I already own an Aimpoint Pro and extremely happy with it! My only issue is it’s about 3-4 times the size of the Primary Arms optic. I like the Aimpoint T2 but it seems a little excessive for a gun that stays up on the gun rack and gets taken to the range every few months.

The meprolight tru dot rds also looks like a great optic also! But once again too big.

Txhillbilly: What Sig Romero 5 do you have in your top picture. I like how low profile the mount is. The ones I see for sale all have full or lower 1/3 co-witness.

Thanks,

Dan

I like the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro or Aimpoint.
Years past, I bought a handful of Aimpoints (CompM2, mostly) that came back from the sandbox and they rode, always on, on top of my SD/HD rifles. I probably paid $150-$250 each for them, used, and over well more than a decade none of them failed or malf'ed in any way.

Recently, I decided that I wanted something smalled/lighter/less visually obtrusive. Of all of the available offerings, either always-on or motion-activated, the one that I settled on was the Deltapoint Pro. It's been highly satisfying, and I very much like the slim housing that doesn't intrude on the both-eyes-open sight picture.

I have a Sig Romeo 5 on a recent AR build and it's been good so far, but hasn't stood the test of time yet. If it doesn't work out I suppose I'll swallow an Aimpoint or similar but I'm hoping it holds up.

I'm looking at the Delta Point Pro for my new HK. Liking that Chevron Reticle for a HD pistol.....ain't like I'll find one but I still like 'em.:D

Depending on the model that you buy, it will come with both mounts.

And I agree, Aimpoint makes the absolute best RDS made. I just didn't need a duty quality RDS on the two carbine's that I put the Romeo 5's on.

There are plenty of brands that incorporate their own shake awake tech. Holosun, Sig, Leupold and others. My Holosun 507C just turned 1 with the same battery it came with, and it is carried everyday.

Well I picked up a Holosun 403B as part of some holiday special sales that were going on. It has 50,000 hour battery life, 12 brightness setting and of course shake awake technology. Also comes with a removable riser so I can get it mounted down low to the receiver of our Ruger PCC.

I appreciate everyone’s suggestions in helping me make this decision!

Dan
