338 Lapua, what can it Really Do Better?

I have 2 Armalite AR50s and they are fun to shoot for 4 or 5 rnds then the concussion starts messing with my sinuses, I bought ammo when it was $1.50-2.00ea and my last gun came with 17 boxes of ammo, I lucked into a couple of cans of milsurp ammo at very reasonable prices. The bad thing about it is finding a place to shoot, I take it to our hunting property during the off season and shoot eng blocks at 1200yrds. They don't fit in a safe unless they are taken apart. I've looked and the 338lm ammo is usually more expensive than 50bmg and the last 338lm rifle I saw was more than I paid for my 50s. I shot a 300wm once and it kicked a LOT more than either of my 50s but they have big muzzle brakes. I wouldn't want to carry a 50 for hunting and when I get it out I prefer to let someone else carry it and the ammo.

It is a sniper round. I am too wimpy to want to get kicked. I am not a sniper.
If I want real steel on target I will call for fire.

The 338 LM is the current "go-to" for long range sniper engagements. As in, beyond 308 range. It has performed exceptionally well in afg and similar environments, and I would have gladly traded my 300 WM MK13 or a dozen M24's for one. A non-US coalition unit I worked with had "scrubbed" their large inventory of sniper weapons, and only kept the SR25 and their new (at the time) 338's. Inside of 600 meters? I don't see the point, myself. And any round will stop a vehicle, as long as you take out the guidance system. It is directly behind the steering wheel.

Yep. Back when I was in and had jobs which required anti vehicle shooting, the target is always the driver first. Even if you disable the engine the vehicle will likely keep moving for a good ways. That's not what you want when a VBIED is trying to push through the front gate. Take out the driver and the vehicle is likely not going to track straight on the intended path and you might stop the bomb from triggering.

Because of that, when I was gunning on a truck I actually preferred the M240B over the M2. I could get far more accurate bursts with the M240B.

Correct. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion. Personally, I liked the MK 47 on a vehicle. I like making things explode.

We only had a few Mk19s in my company and I never saw them run reliably enough for me to want one. The M2s ran pretty good and the 240s all ran flawlessly.

Brake or no?
My Barrett isn’t any worse than a 12g slug

the concussion/blast is quite impressive though
Un-braked 700adl synthetic and im not even 100% sure he didnt just ream out the stock barrel and open the bolt face.
Had a leupold a vari-x series hunting scope on it. Blew the crap out of w rock and handed it back.

The MK19 is an unreliable, poorly designed, unsafe VN era boat anchor. The act of loading a MK19 is a violation of the most basic rules of firearms safety. I have to question the intellect of whoever decided that it was OK to approve issue of a weapon that the operator must pull the trigger in order to load it and make it ready for use, and ponder why a modification to eliminate this dangerous design flaw was never developed over the decades that this weapon has been in use. The DOD needs to come off of some $ and release funds to procure the MK47 for conventional units to use outside of the wire and demote the MK19 to second line use, such as for static base defense, until it is eliminated from the inventory.

Antimaterial gradually jumps directly from 30-06 Springfield to 50 BMG in my obtuse mind. Then, it goes straight to an aircraft carrier. I know, I lack knowledge and diplomacy.
The 338 LM outperforms 50 caliber systems like the Barrett in every way except armor defeating. No one wants to freefall, fast rope, or hump a Barrett, if it can be avoided. Trust me.

My 45-70 with “Marlin” loads will bruise my shoulder when fired without additional protection. Makes my 50 BMG seem like a kitten. It’s also 27 lbs lighter and doesn’t have a very effective muzzle brake.

I can never remember, what's the bag limit on engine blocks? And are small blocks and big blocks the same season? I know rotary's are practically a protected species they're so rare anymore.
I do believe you can get a special permit for rotaries, they have been discovered to be parasitizing 1970s corollas...........

Bought a used Mazda RX3 with the rotary engine in 1975. It was a couple of years old. When it ran it was fast. If you went over 55mph it blew the AC compressor. I still wish I could have afforded to put a few bullets into the block.
