I'm looking to replace the guide rod/springs on a sr40c, and wanted some first-hand advice on what weight to purchase. They say factory standard is 16lbs., but would an 18lb. setup make for less felt recoil with standard pressure ammo...or only result in FTEs and more issues than it's worth?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Factory standard recoil springs are selected by the manufacture gun designers to provide reliable function in the handgun with the typical ammo SAAMI pressures that their customers will purchase. If you handload to a high pressure level or shoot a lot of +P or +P+ ammo as a member of law enforcement may do a stronger recoil spring can help reduce the battering of the gun parts by the higher pressure ammo by slowing the slide speed. It is necessary to test the reliability of your handguns feed and ejection with a new higher powered spring. If you go to gunsprings.com (the Wolf gun springs website) you should be able to purchase a calibration pac with an assortment of low power to higher power springs that can be used to test and determine witch gunspring pressure gives you both reliable feed and ejection with the ammo you typically shoot.

Lower powered recoil springs on the other hand are often installed to allow a firearm to function with low power target handloads.

Recoil springs will loose strength over time with use so if you replace a well used spring with a new standard weight spring you should notice that you need greater force to operate the slide and cycle the action with the new full power standard spring vrs the older used spring. How this affects the felt recoil is something you just need to try. Personally I don't really notice any recoil difference with a slightly heavier recoil spring. I have used slightly heavier recoil springs in my 9mm's as I generally load medium to the upper end of the standard pressure data with jacketed bullets for FMJ, JHP's and don't load much low velocity stuff.
