I've been looking around online and found that Not all synthetic SKS stocks are created equal! I've read everything from stuff that doesn't fit, "Is perfect with a little machining," breaks, or looks pretty but you can't use the iron sights with! It's hard to just go off reviews alone. Does anyone have experience with any of these or thoughts?

I ideally just want something really light.

Years ago I had a Choat stock on an SKS. It wasn’t pretty but it was light. I do not recall any open gaps and it fit well. I actually don’t know if they are even made any longer.

Funny story, apparently Choat recently broke one of their mold and there's no notice as to when they're getting it replaced. They send out a boatload of refunds.

I have a ramline on mine. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1006860187 It seems fine. Especially when you think of it as a $50 stock put on $100 $250 gun. It's certainly nowhere near as good as a sabatti shotgun

Keep in mind that the SKS is a cheap gun and there's enough variation in the rifles themselves that even if the stocks were all identical you're going to get different fits.

I don't even know if ramline is still in business though.

Just make sure you don't lose the original stock. After you get fed up with the finicky stock and duckbill magazines, you will appreciate the fixed 10 round magazine and wood stock. Since you still have it, you can just reinstall it.

Put a set of tech-sights on it if you really want to improve it. Good luck.

Original Chicom fiberglass jungle stock. If you can't find one, cornhusker77's suggestion has my attention.

I keep thinking the same.... but then I remember that half the point of this gun for me was the fact that it doesn’t “look scary” and putting a synthetic stock on it ruins that aesthetic. Heard good things, for the price, about the ramline (sp?) stock.

I have an older black sporter style Choate I used on a Norinco SKS. It fit well and made for a handy overall package. I sold the rifle with it's original wood stock and kept the Choate. PM if interested.

Ive never seen a stock for the SKS I like better than the wood one. Ive never felt the stock was very heavy. Mine works with DMs too, with no bubba required. Though i prefer the box mag.

The tapco one looks great up front but the back seems too much like an AR. That ATI one looks pretty good, once i visually block the scope off!

The best stock for a stock SKS is the stock stock. All the after market one look bubba to me.

I agree somewhat. My Russian and Yugo have standard LOP on the stocks. My two Norinco Paratroopers are very short even for me. I like 12" Hogue overmolds on my HD shotguns. But the 12" on the Paras are hard to aim. One has the replacement stock on it. I regret not getting a red fiberglass jungle stock to try when they were like 10.00 bucks in Shotgun news. But I,m happy with the CE stock. I think it,s unbreakable and looks less military. A plus in The Kingdom of Cuomo. (NY)

I needed a longer length of pull on my SKS.
Changed to a plastic stock. Wish I had known about those slip on recoil pads. It would have been a much better option.

Tapco with or without bayonet cutout

Everybody I've talked to really likes those tapco stocks, but I've heard people have a hard time getting a sight picture on their irons without a cheek raiser. Is that true in your experience?

I appreciate your feedback here, but I do have a couple of (respectful) counterpoints.

1. I do like traditional wood on an SKS, but oftentimes that wood is pretty rough. SKSs were coming to the US in a lot of different conditions, and it isn't unheard of to see chips or damage to a stock with an SKS. Synthetic stocks don't have this problem and typically increase the value of the weapon.
2. Many of the synthetic stocks look exactly like the traditional wooden one but are a lot lighter. The Choate Monte Carlo for instance is like 1.7 lbs. Can't beat a lighter weapon and it doesn't necessarily look "bubba'd up."
3. It also kind of comes down to what you're doing. If you want to use an SKS in a defensive situation, having a pistol grip and magazine fed weapon at half the weight with a picatinny rail mounted optic on it is definitely going to be a better option than the old traditional wooden one with irons. I'm not some kind of nutcase saying to go fight WWIII with it, but an SKS with aftermarket parts can give you a pretty ergonomic and accurate weapon for like 1/3 of the price of other rifles.
4. I feel like the word "bubba" is relative. Are we throwing a bipod, drum mag, folding stock, flashlight, and 500 yard telescopic scope on it? Maybe. Are we putting it in a more ergonomic, lighter synthetic stock with an acog or reflexive sight? Maybe not.

I do want to clarify I hear your point and I usually do like wooden furniture on my rifles, but I'm kind of an SKS evangelist and think it's an awesome platform.

I have had this Choate on my Yugo for many years, I have always been happy with it, it fits greatView attachment 966909

Have you had any magazine feeding issues? What mags work best for you? I've been looking at quite a few and I'm going to start testing them out.

Also, what optic mount did you use? I'm ideally looking for something that will mount without any filing or machining (Which I know is a lot to ask for an SKS).

That goes for anyone here on the forum (not to derail my own thread). I'd just rather save money and not go through fifteen different kinds before I find one I like .

Have to admit I agree. Tried the Choate and it made the rifle seem too unwieldy, tried aftermarket Chicom 20 round mags (internal) and couldn't get them to feed reliably. Came full circle and realized my SKS's were just fine the way they came. Handy, portable and reliable.

Yup. Quick and easy to load. Short and handy. Goes bang every single time. I have two 30rd mags that work great, one metal and one zytel. If i wanna blast a lot, its a matter of popping the stock off, pulling the box mag out, and putting the stock back on. Never had to inlet it or anything.

Can you imagine the logistics involved in fielding a bunch of those wonky shaped magazines in combat? How do you go about designing an ergonomic pouch to hold those!!? Lol
