Anybody use Winchester 244? I am going to try it for some LSWC .357 in the upper end of data.

I am interested in using it in 44 and 30-30 cast loads as well.

Just looking for any experience or insight!

I've used it behind plated bullets in the 45 Auto and 45 Colt. Results were similar to W231 in those applications.

There was another thread similar to this a while ago. I’ve found 244 to be very similar to 231 if not just a bit better. Future powder orders will preference 244. Good luck.

I bought 8 lbs but haven't opened it up yet. The plan is to get a minor PF load for 9mm tested this Friday.

What are you expecting though? It's a modern ball powder so it's going to have high density, meter well and be usable in a variety of cartridges. It's basically guaranteed to be cleaner than 231, though I've never had a problem with copper fouling in a handgun and have never met anyone who has.

My understanding was it was slower than 231/HP-38 but a little research negated that.

Primarily looking for something similar to Universal Clays.

Regardless, I imagine it will work nicely in 357. I’ll see how it does in 44 as well.

I'm sure it will. I've got Universal as well so I'll load up some of both in 9mm and run them over the Choro. My understanding is 244 is faster than Universal but not significantly so.

I was midrange in the Hodgdon online data when I hit 130 with a 147gr bullet. My velocities were consistently higher than online data predicted. I’m not sure it’s any cleaner than 231, at least in my guns.

In burn rate, I use Target and Titegroup when I think of Clays. If/when powder is a bit more available, I’m going to try N310 in this category as well. 244 is in my ASP/N320 burn rate category. There are lots of good powders out there. Good luck.

I figure in the not so distant future, Hodgdon will replace HP-38/W231. Just because of the byproduct of waste the powder has during production. Maybe W244 is the future replacement, I don't know.
Right now I have enough HP-38 to last for some time. But I am keeping an eye on the experience of others for now. :)
