Is ammo getting cheaper and more available ?

Wednesdays around me is the day that three of the ammo outlets get a smidge of ammo. Most times I have been able to find 9mm for more then reasonable prices, some 22.lr..

Is it getting better? No, not yet. But there isn't the lines in front of the stores when they first open either, so its a give and take observation on this at this time.

Youngest son does the 'LGS' route 3-4 times a week. Cabelas, Sportsman Warehouse, Jax, wally world and a couple of small shops and has been pretty lucky to find 9mm, 223, 556, 38, 357 and 22LR..AND altho not pre covid prices, still not bad($15 for 50 9mm, 1/2 of the online goug-a-matic places).

Denver, Westminster area.

If he's really going to all those places three to four times a week, it seems like the price of gasoline and especially depreciation of his vehicle would erase almost all or all of the potential savings, to say nothing of the immense amount of time spend on the endeavor, but maybe he shoots a lot more often than me.

So who’s buying, joe6pack or LGS?

The brother and daughter of a LGS owner would go to the local wallmarts buying up ammo to be resold in his store.
This was a couple of panics ago. His daughter was married to a sporting dept. manager at wallmart.
It was kind of a joke that some people would peel off his price sticker to see how much wallmart was charging.

We DO shoot a lot, he has an inexpensive to drive car and these places aren't all that far away nor far from each other. He works from home as a QC guy for a bank and finishes his work about 1pm...
BUT, thanks for your concern about my kids finances:cool:...He got 9mm, 380 and 223 yesterday at the local Sportsman's Warehouse. 9mm-$.32 per, 380-$.60 per, same for 223...online, ALL this are easily double the $ or more(with shipping)....

Good for him, but frankly that sounds like a lot of work.
Not work at all..entertainment. Not only finding ammo at these places, get to wander around gun displays and counters..yes, kinda slim pickins but sometimes interesting stuff there. And being a 'fly on the wall' at some of these big places and to overhear some of the conversations..priceless..

As Colorado 'Covid 'numbers' improve, it's getting a little less comfy wandering around some of these BIG stores tho..

Now that the fire ban in Colorado lifted, we shoot a lot.

What is this "local gun shop" you guys speak of..? o_O
OK, true that "The People's Republik of Lawrence" has a range/shop now but he only sells ammo to the members there.
Other than that it's slim pickings within a 20-40 mile radius.

No way I'm buying anything from a place that only accepts those forms of payment. Screams scam

I'm sure it's pure coincidence that they don't take any forms of payment with fraud protection. Also coincidental is that if you Google their contact phone number the top results comes back for MediWeedWorldwide.

Yep, ammo everywhere.

Edited to add: I tried the phone number for Chris Parker / MediWeed and it goes to a Google Voice line. I would strongly discourage anyone from sending them money (for either business).

I did a search on who issued the domain and they are in Panama. The IP address said Atlanta, GA.

I don't see any improvement.

I'm lucky I bought 1,000 rounds of M193 back in the '90s for an expected self-defense situation.

Handgun ammunition besides overpriced FMJs? I'm not seeing any.

As events develop in the coming months, I see things getting worse.

right now, i am buying reloaded ammo, from a sporting store. they have been reloading ammo since about the early 1990's i believe.

they have a "deposit" on the brass, of $2.00 for the 50 rds.

so, with that return of the spent brass, i am paying $20 for 50 rds of .45 ACP...

9mm is $18. with the returned brass.

not bad, shoots really good.

i'm satisfied. and when i can buy factory fresh, i will do so. (sometimes that have that as well)

i personally hope to start reloading my own stuff, by this coming spring.

how much do you want to tell us what "sporting store" this is .?
a bait and tackle store. found the place from another member at the range, it's where he buys all his ammo, then as i browsed the store, i saw the RIA 1911 A1, and grabbed it up.

Have you been shooting off of the same case since the 90's then, or you're saying that's your backup stash? I can't imagine it's the former, since a person would run out if they shot 50 rounds each year for 20 years.

  1. I bought my AR and two uppers strictly for self-defense. Most of my rifle shooting after that point was NRA long range at six hundred yards and farther with two Savage sniper/target rifles in .308 and .30-06.
  2. I used some of the ammo occasionally, but it mostly sat around in sealed bags in ammo cans. I doubt I went through two bags in all that time.
  3. For the last twenty years, I lived in a cramped, crappy apartment in which ANY non-NFA long gun would have been as useless as a 15' pike. A forced move to a decent apartment due to a fire, and widespread lawlessness , coupled with relative financial security due to having a real job, inspired me to upgrade the AR to a modern upper with optic and light. Fortunately, I had most of the 1,000 rounds in cans, plus a never opened Guatemalan battle pack.

Dang you've had quite a time. Cheers to you for getting through. I keep an AR for HD in 5.56, and use 77gr OTM rounds in it for defense. A case I bought around 2009 took until this year to dwindle enough for me to replace it. I'll practice with 55 or 62 gr, and only run the heavier rounds for sighting in a new optic, functions checking the gun after I change something on it, or occasionally to see just how tight my groups can really be.

My first *** for 2021. Got an email this morning from cheaperthandirt telling me about this great deal for 9mm ammo. Am i missing something ?
