Ayoob is old. Just kidding , wanted to throw out a zinger.

Use what works best for you. a full power semi auto is a good choice. I'd take an m1a over an ar15 depending on the situation.

Like his argument for the conventional stock, too.

Why the M1 rifle is still a keeper.

He's entitled to his opinion, and I am entitled to mine.

Funny how he doesn't even have a sling or weaponlight on that rifle.

the M14/M1A is a classic, .....but there is a reason that every army on earth with a budget has transitioned to 5.56, 5.45, etc.

Its nice to a see a setup that isn't an M4 clone, railed out and paired with a Glock 19. I am pretty sure Mr. Ayoob could really work that M1A out there on his acreage if need be. Better than most I see around here trying to figure out what the forward assist does on their AR-15.

Armies - generally spend a lot more time humpin'... than they do on the range.

Light weight, and a lot of trigger pulls, are a plus.

Puttin' things down in one, out to 500 yards, is a different requirement.

An AR in 556 is still a great choice. Reasonably light and handy, enough punch to take medium game in a pinch and you can carry a lot of ammo without a lot of weight. I don't think you really need more power against two legged threats in most situations. They're also super reliable and robust. A good bolt gun would also be a great choice in a lot of cases, and I'd take one over a lever gun.

I think an AR would be a much better choice than an M1A. I'm all about nostalgia but an M1A is not gonna be the first thing I grab when 'it' hits the fan. That usually happens at night, so I want a platform readily compatible with optics and a weaponlight. In the case of the latter, you need not only a place to mount it but it must be easily manipulated. If I wanted or needed more than the vast array of AR chamberings can manage, I'd simply step up to an AR10 variant. My first line of defense:

Absolutely.

... as long as the sights work for you.
How would an M1A suffice but a levergun wouldn't?

My FN 1930 in 30-'06

Rugged, Dependable and accurate out to where one needs it.

Also a real cartridge not a varmitt rifle

It's heavy, the ammo is heavy, the mags are heavy.... All in all not anywhere near a first choice for me. .308 semi-auto would be a FAL.

Todd.

Collapsible stocks are nice for transport and adjustment when wearing different clothes.
Can fit multiple sized folks in the family too.

Seems, generally speaking, that older guys want the heavy steel and wood guns with big heavy bullets, while the young guys want the light plastic guns with small and light bullets.

I guess at 57 years, I'm still young...I want my light weight 5.56 AR and 9MM Glock.

But to each their own. I love the M1A, and the FAL, and the AR10...but my old bones and joints prefer to carry the AR15.

Im no AR fan, really.
But I still see why they are popular, and yeah, technically I am a boomer.
Think those that choose them (or similar) and making a good call for when the SHTF.
But then, a few million already know this and aint gonna read another rehash of the obvious.
So those that write for a living have to do something different to get noticed.

LOL

Your ideal SHTF rifle doesn't have optics, because your gun isn't capable of mounting them? o_O

Yeah. Definitely some ad copy.
