unlike my previous post with the 586 where i am trying to learn something. this one is posted purely for fun. i took my full lugged 8 3/8 model 29 and decided to shoot more of my reloads from 2018 and 2019. talk about nose heavy. i would have been happier with a half lug. my SRH balances better. for this gun i again noticed that MBC 240 gr swc at .432 with 296 is slightly more accurate than xtp over 296 at 225 yds. ( i didnt do so well it took 16 rds to walk it in to a 10 by 10 gong so more of luck but the dispersion was less with the MBC bullet. 2 of those cylinders were with the xtp which is more accurate at distance in my SRH.) i didn't include it in the video as there's nothing more exciting than seeing dirt fly on the berm.

the DA pull on this is quite heavy so i am guilty of going off target with my finger still inside the trigger guard while waiting for the target to move less. still pointed downrange of course.

what i enjoy the most with 44 mag is how the gongs move so next time i will zoom less on the gong to see more of the jump of the target. this gun looks so cool on video with that heavy unwieldy barrel though.

this is what i mean by the gongs jumping around being fun. it's an old video so i had different cameras and didn't have capability of doing picture in picture but you can just fast forward to the targets jumping around. the SRH is easier to shoot than the smith. the wood grip on the smith looks really nice but can't compare to a hogue tamer grip in terms of shootability.

Even though I have a few magnum caliber revolvers with barrels longer than 6”, I’m still partial to a max barrel length of 6” for the reasons you state.... especially in a full-lug configuration like your S&W. That’s a lot of steel out there on the nose and I, too find the long tubes somewhat unwieldy.

That being said, your blued .44 is a beautiful gun for sure .

Stay safe.

If the DA pull is that heavy have a smith tune it. No reason to fight a heavy trigger pull.

Absolutely, they are an excellent trigger when tuned. I used a S&W 624 for a couple years for nra bullseye that a local gunsmith tuned. That revolver would flat out shoot.

I have a mod29 8 3/8s" and a 6" Taurus and I shoot the Taurus probably 2 or 3 time more since it is easier to hold on target. I also have a 6"45c that gets shot a lot more than the 29. I also shoot steel but at 25 and 50yrds and there is a noticeable difference in the ring between the 44mags and the 357m or 38s.

My M29-2 is a 6.5". It is smooth, accurate and, with my middle of the road handloads, is easy to shoot. The load is only around 1150 fps to 1200 fps depending on the gun. The load is with cast SWC.
