Thanks DocRock, right you are. Thought I had maple but the stock is birch; it is sweet.

Recommendations on a peep sight for this gun? Considerations:
- historical is okay
- modern repro is okay
- something that works, it will be used
- fits onto the standard gun as is, without d&t

Will I need to replace the front hooded sight, or does it depend on what model diopter is used? Are rear / front sets common?

Put half a box down the pipe this week, what a smooth shooter, love it! A windy day, gusts were at 25 mph but I was able to hold and get close. My understanding is with standard ladder sight set on the lowest setting, 300, it shoots 11" high at 100 yards... would love a system that brings that down quite a bit, like to 2".

P.S. From 2013, here is a great comment, cut and paste, from Float Pilot:
"The BUSK diopter which I have only seen one or two....
The MG Anderesson diopter, which I never never seen even one.
The Elit sight, which is very common
The Faldt rear sight,,,, Saw one once...
The GF Diopter rear sight... These were made by the Military armory I won a few.
The Hauges rear sight from Norway.
The Hellqvist which looks like R2D2
The Halsikte Hooka rear sight which looks alot like the BUSK sight.
The Lyman number 48 rear sight.
The Pramm Rear sight, I have seen lots of these.
and the Soderin rear sight. There are Lot and Lots of these...."

I have an M96 myself and would love to put a good aperture on it so I will be watching this thread.

In training with the M-14, which had peep sights, once you had your battle sight zero, they used to tell us "aim for the head if they're far away and it will drop into the body, or aim for their belt buckle if they're close and it will rise into their chest."

Any hit on the pop up targets was a good one, MOA was not required. System worked well enough to earn me an Expert Rifleman award, with pop ups out to 600m.

I wish I still had those eyes. lol

Very nice rifle! For a cheap and fast fix glue a piece on top of the front blade to make it higher. This will lower the impact with the rear set on it,s lowest. Not sure of the thickness but it will work without altering the gun. Black Max is the best glue and you can remove it with some heat. Enjoy and Happy New Year.

That is common sense at its best, thanks! Agreed, Loctite Black Max is awesome. It's not supposed to stand up to this but I used it on a British car's fuel pump innards and it never failed.

Ha, that is great! My intent is to shoot a whitetail (next season) or javelina humanely, up to 100 yards, while I still can.

Hmmm, what do we have here? Again, my first milsurp... this doesn't look like a simple drift it out with a brass punch, to change the front sight? If changing the sight bubba's the gun, I will reconsider. Apologies for the basic questions!

Now if you had another front sight, you could weld an extension on the top, remove the original, reserve it, and replace with the mod. Cut the replacement mod down to size for sight in.
I imagine that gun parts corp has a 96 front sight, just get the tallest they offer to start with.

Tall front blade sight is ordered and on the way!

While searching for one I ran into this non-invasive M-96 Scout Scope mount from Bad Ace Tactical. Tempting: sporter utility without sporterizing. Perhaps The Colonel would approve? Scopes are on sale at Opticsplanet too. Must. Resist. Think I will stay old school for now.

When I first got into milsurp back in the 90's I tried a bunch of the b-square type non-destructive scope mounts. I found that for me they really take away from the original feel and handling of the rifles... which is the part I really love! Your results might be different though.

A peep sight on the other hand would be VERY tempting!

I put a Lyman 4

I put a Lyman 48 on mine and could hold 1.5 to 2” groups at a 100 yards no problem. It was too heavy and unyielding so I traded it for a British Jungle Carbine that is lucky to hold 3 to 4” at a hundred. It is much handier in a tree stand though.
