Just got a Ruger #1 chambered in 222 Remington. Decided on 52 gr Sierra MatchKing bullets but everywhere I looked: OUT OF STOCK.

Went to Graf & Sons and again, nothing available. But they did have: LIGHTNING 22c (.224) 55gr FMJBT BULLET at 10¢ per round.

Anyone familiar with “Lightning” bullets? It says “Made in the USA” on their box.

If I were reloading the .222 for accuracy, I would pick any name brand soft point or hollow point, or poly tipped bullet over FMJ.

If I only wanted to plink with cheap bullets (Not much out there these days? :)), I would save the barrel life on my nice .222, and use a .223 etc.

I picked up some bulk bullets from a regional forum that were advertised as seconds. Prices used to be ~.05/round but have crept up to about ~.06 now. They were sold by weight, not count. These came packaged in bags with the Lighting brand but I don't know who actually makes them. They weren't advertised as boattail, just FMJ. About 20% were flat base, around 75% were boattail and a handful were somewhat boattail. The scuttlebutt was these were the from the initial setup which explains the inconsistencies and the price. I did get barely sub MOA plinking fodder for my AR15 using IMR-4895 but not by much. For what I expected I would do it again. I would not expect anything like precision, especially if I had your rifle, but who knows. These could actually be first quality. If I were trying to wring the most accuracy out of a fine rifle, I'd put a top quality projectile through it. Not something bought in bulk and repackaged.

What I did notice was that the cannelure was pretty consistent. I picked up a bulk box of Remington brand once and it appeared the cannelure location was from four distinct production runs/processes, making any type of consistent crimp impossible.

For my money Midway and Midsouth both have their store brand .224 bullets in PSP or Hollow point that are a bargain and shoot real well out of my .222 and .223 bolt rifle. Right now it's tough getting any kind of bullets.
The 55g fmj are not that well known for accuracy but make good blammo ammo for the grandkids with an AR.

Check you barrel's twist rate. Many 222's are 1 in 14", and may not shoot 55 gr BTs well.

I thought with a 1:14 twist rate for the Triple Deuce you’re good if you stay below 60 grains?

I’m completely new to the Triple Deuce!

My 1/14 .222 Mag stabilizes 55 Gr, but it can push them faster. It is borderline on 60 Gr bullets, some will.

55 grs is hit or miss. I stick with 52 grs for certainty. My Savage Walking Varminter will stabilize 55 grs no problem. My Savage 340 B will not. Same load, same twist.

My Savage 340 doesn't really care for 55gr bullets, and it's a 1/14 twist. Currently I'm using PPU 50gr SP factory ammo, which will group 0.361" at 50 yards. I've got some Hornady 50 gr V-max and Hornady 52gr BTHP Match coming to test, but I feel like they will likely out-perform the 55's that I loaded and hopefully equal or better the factory 50's. There are some 50gr Sierra's on GB: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/881829327, might be worth looking into.

My Rem 722 222 with 1/14 twist does not like 55gn fmj. I’ve been using Hornady 50gn V-max and some 4198, which she truly likes.
