I’m looking at adding a budget 9MM. LGS actually has decent selection and I looked at a SAR 9 ($329)and Taurus G3 ($299). Just wanting something for range and add to home defense. Boy the SAR felt really good in the hand, and seems to have good reviews. Anyone have experience with it?

I have a Security 9. Other suggestions welcome as well.

These days you are sort of at the mercy of what's available. If the SAR seems nice enough, go for it. I am not a big fan of Taurus, so that would be a no go for me. A budget pistol, however, is a budget pistol.... you get what you pay for.

I had a Ruger LC-9S..EC-9S a less $ version..didn't really like shooting it at all but it cost $319...

Sarsilmaz has been producing firearms longer than Colt. I current own a Sar ST10, which is an outstanding firearm that build quality is right up there with the very best. Their current facility in Turkey is as state of the art as you can get. They are far from a budget firearm, don't go by their price, their quality is equal to all the top notch gun manufactures. The Taurus is not even close. If you do some research on Sar firearms you'll see just how good they really are. Possibly the most rigorously tested pistol ever developed, the new SAR9 endured 130° baking to simulate desert conditions, -50° for the arctic, salt fog, high altitude, 24 hours of rain, solar radiation, fouling, drop tests and 150,000 round of live fire in the factory. Police later ran their own test that included 50,000 rounds. Finally, a NATO test against major manufacturers from Austria, German and the U.S. ran 90,000 rounds with the SAR9 the clear winner.

I recently picked up a Taurus G3C for $303. out the door. So far it seems to be a decent pistol. 12 rounds of 9mm, 3 mags in the box, about the size of a G27.

Thanks for the replies so far. I am a Ruger fan and have considered the LC9/EC9, but for now am wanting a bigger gun for more range use.

LGS also had a Canik but I think it was $449. They have a ton of M&P, Sig and Glock. Usually a lot of Rugers but low at this time.

Planning on going back tomorrow. With the crowds they have been having, I hope they’re still available...

Along with the Sar ST10 I also currently own 5 Ruger handguns. My son recently purchased a Ruger Security 9 compact which I have shot and like very much. I had a EC9S, a nice gun but just wasn't for me, surely not a range gun. I would purchase the SAR 9 in a heartbeat if I was looking for another 9mm. I purchased two Taurus firearms in my lifetime, A TX22 and a G2C. Biggest gun buying mistake I've ever made, both failed within a few months and the most miserable customer service I've ever encountered. Could not get rid of them both fast enough. Taurus will never get another dime of my money. There are way to many better gun makers out there than Taurus. If I was in your situation I would purchase the Sar without a moments hesitation.

Before the madness I picked up a slightly used Ruger SR9C for $300. Quite the value for the $. Gave it to my dad.
Recently I started shopping for another full size HD/range pistol. I'm still looking for something representing an improvement over my SR9C.

I feel that my Ruger SR9C was one of the best gun buying decisions I've ever made. Paid $309 NIB. My only problem with it is as I'm getting older and eye site isn't what it used to be is the smallish sights on it are getting tougher for me. I really liked the sights on my sons new Security nine compact, really wish I could put those sights on my SR9C.

Of the two mentioned in the OP, the SAR 9, hands down. Good ergo's, DA/SA with condition 1 as an option.

A lot of people hate on the Taurus name and they have a reason for it. Taurus use to make some of the worst guns available, notice I said use to. They have upped their game pretty good. I bought a G3 recently and it has been an excellent pistol for the money. It has surprised me so far. I bought it for a range toy, but it might get a more higher role due to the reliability it’s given and proven.

With the pending $45 per box new federal ammo tax, promised for sometime soon after Jan. 20, there is nothing that will be "budget" any longer. Let us know what you decide. Best of luck!

When I was looking at compact to full size 9mm.s awhile back I also checked out the SAR9 and was quite impressed by it. There was an apparent quality to the gun along with it's very affordable price. I particularly liked some of the design features like the interchangeable grip panels and backstraps (much like those found on an HK VP9), the ambi thumb safety, and the steel sights. If I were in the market for a budget 9mm. I would give some serious thought to picking up a SAR9.

Funny enough, I won a SAR B6 something 9mm CZ clone in a raffle last year, won a Taurus G3c this year. They're both nice guns for the money, the SAR may be a better quality item for the money, it just seems nicer, but they've both been good shooters.

Check out the Smith and Wesson 9mm called the SW9VE (also called the Sigma). It's a Glock 19 clone (in fact, Smith got sued for patent infringement by Glock and lost) but costs half to two-thirds of what a Glock costs, depending on where you are. I understand that they are ultra reliable, just like the Glock.

My apologies; I thought the SAR 9 was their CZ75 copy; I see now it's a polymer striker-fired gun.
