I just bought a S&W model 624. SS 44 Special. Has a 6 1/2 barrel. Factory original smooth target grips, wide target hammer and grooved trigger. Gun is 95-98% condition. SS can use a polishing. I paid $800 and believe it was a good deal. No box. It is not one of the recalled one's either.
What say you fellow gunners?

Pics will help a ton, you’ll get good opinions with a few good ones.

Stay safe.

I'm thinking not exactly a screaming deal but if I wanted one (which I do) I'd pay that without a second thought. I'd call it a fair price. I can tell you 10 years from now you'll be happy.

Hard for me to reconcile 95-98% with "SS can use a polishing". As long as you don't polish it to nickel-plate bright I'm good but then maybe I'm not as excited about the price if you think it needs polishing. Good pics would help.

From your description $800 seems like a fair price for a Model 624. If you want to clean up the stainless a bit try using Flitz instead of Mother's Mag Polish. Flitz isn't as abrasive as Mother's so not so shiny but will do a good job of cleaning up most surface marks and oil/powder residue.

Thanks. I was going to use Mothers

I did the Mother's treatment to my S&W Model 649 mainly because it reminded me of a nickel plated Model 38 that I had previously. As you can see it can be made quite shiny without too much effort.

Now my Model 686 had been Flitzed early on and then polished a few times polished with Mother's but you can tell it's not nearly as shiny as the Model 649.

Just go easy on the Flitz and you should be alright with a nice, overall, low gloss shine to the stainless.

Over the past few years, I've obtained a 3", 4" and 6-1/2" S&W 624. Prices ranged from $800 to $1000 so the OP did ok with his purchase.

I paid over a grand for this one a few weeks ago. A 4" "no dash" with Eagle stocks. I didn't even bother to quibble over the price. Just take my money and shut up.

I gave it a light once over with Flitz, then waxed it with Ren Wax, and called it good. I have owned a couple of 4" Model 24-3's (blue version/same gun) over the years and (1) during a period of unemployment, and (2) a bout of stupid, let them get away. They only made about 2500 of the 4" -3's and and I let TWO of them get away. :notworthy:

This is as close as I've come to replacing them, so I didn't hesitate. Now, I just need a chance to shoot it.

So, yea...$800 for a 6" is a good price IMHO.

I paid just north of a grand for a pristine Model 24 with the 3 Ts about a year ago. Going off Gun Brokers prices at the time I felt it was a fair deal bordering on high but I wanted it:)

Great gun and getting harder to find! I think you did good. Enjoy and post some pictures once you get her.

Go on Gunboker and see the ridiculous prices being asked, you will be happy with what you paid.

Askin' and gettin' are two different things. I looked for actual completed sales of 6" guns and there were a couple of 99% guns with original boxes and one without a box. All went for $900-$950.

Absolutely, just bought a 629 MSRP 1199, $949 out the door LGS. But on Gunbroker all were going for over MSRP. Just crazy times we are living. Great Find, Nice gun, enjoy.

If you were willing to pay $800 for it then it was a good deal. What's not to like about it?

Howdy

I searched for a Model 24 in vain for years. So when I came across this 624 about ten years ago I grabbed it.

The best that I have done is I found a Model 24-6 with a 6-1/2" barrel in 2012. It was one of the Classic Series, I believe, so it has the lock. :(

But. I've found some nice Model 624's since then.

I was looking on gunbroker, last night, and checked to see what 624s were selling for now. There were 3 or 4 3” , 1 6 1/2” and 1 4” for sale. The other sights had even less. There are not very many for sale, right now. A few years ago, there were many for sale. People that have them, are holding on to them. No dash and prelock 624s, may be one of those revolvers that it’s get it now or pay a very high price late revolvers. I bought a 4”, new in the box, a few years ago and paid a grand for it. I thought I paid too much at the time, but now I see I could easily get what I paid, and then some. I don’t think 624s will be a easy to come by, as they were a few years back. I think the price they bring will only increase. Mine, would be on of the last I would consider selling.

Howdy Again

I did have a Model 24 for a while. It was one of those that had a small birds head style grip frame. I think it had some big rubber grips to cover up the strange grip frame and make the grip full sized. I don't really remember. I don't remember what dash it was either. I sold it when I found a really nice 44 Hand Ejector, 4th Model, the predecessor to the Model 24.

This is my 44 Hand Ejector, 4th Model. It left the factory in 1955. It goes nicely with my 44 Hand Ejectors 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Models. I have since stopped looking for a Model 24, but I suppose if one fell into my lap I might buy it.
