I have searched the web to get an idea of the current market pricing for a German (1941, byf) K98 Mauser. The stock and receiver numbers match, not the bolt or butt plate. Barrel is decent, distinct rifling. The stock shows normal wear but no cracks. I'm sure it's a capture with import marking on the barrel.

From my search on the web, it leads me to believe that the current starting price is somewhere between $450-500. Is that correct, or am I using the wrong search method?

Thank you for any info that can be provided.

There are a few tiers.... fully matching non refurbed non import marked... $2k and up.

Mismatched but not refurbed, $850-1500 depending on rarity condition etc.

Typical Russian Capture, will have a stamped X on the receiver but most markings present, these are always mismatched, $650-850 these days.

Yugo capture (usually matched by Yugos but sometimes found partially mismatched, usually scrubbed to remove all German markings) $400-550 these days.

I managed to steal a 1940 Mauser produced K98K RC from the LGS at $299 about two years ago, but that was dumb luck. The bore looked like it was a spiral sewer pipe, but actually cleaned-up nicely to just some light frosting in the grooves. If you see one similar, it may also be a diamond in the rough.

Interesting, I will have to look closer at the markings.

Mine was purchased from a co-workers' nephew who needed cash. Also included a crate 900 rds. -20 rds of quality surplus ammo. I still have +500 left. It was a better deal than I thought.
I never imagined that the Mauser would have went up so much in price.

Hoo boy, that's way too low. Your rifle's specs sound similar to mine, and I paid $750 for it four months ago. They're probably approaching $1K by now. K98's are one of the "hot" milsurps at the moment.

If you're seeing decent K98s for $450-$500 I would scoup one up. Prices have been getting nuts on those rifles recently.

About 15 years ago I found a nice bring back k98 at a rural auction. Dang if I didn't get out bid by some old guy with a roll of bills that was larger than mine. If I remember it went for over $400 back then.

I did a closer inspection of the rifle. It isn't a Yugo capture, still has factory proofmarks with the Third Reich eagle. It has grind marks on the left of the receiver and barrel where the serial number is. I'm thinking maybe a swastika was stamped in those two places.
There isn't the X stamped on the receiver to mark for Russia. But there is signs of a heavy coat of "blueing" was applied. Magazine plate, stock ring, and the bayonet lug don't match.

On the barrel, where it meets the receiver is stamped 40W367.

Near the end of the barrel is dot stamped import mark K98 8mm Germany & C.A.I. Georgia VT.

Not all Russian captures were "X" stamped. I'm thinking that most of the evidence does point to it being a Russian capture. Though a fairly unique one, to be sure.

The stories these rifles could tell!!
