Don't over pay for ammo and reloading supplies

When retailers raise prices to keep supply on hand it has a stabilizing effect. Selling your stock at artificially low prices seems like ‘good will’ but Wal-Mart alone probably tripled the length of the last shortage funding resellers with connections and a routine to buy them out. If people are lining up to buy then resell, it’s priced too low.

Or people are panicking and not too smart. I sold some .380 for $40 bx recently since I had extra and don't shoot that gun anymore. Cheapest I could find on ammo seek was $45 bx. Went to Cabela's the next week and they had some on their shelf for $25, go figure.

Aim Surplus just listed Austrian .308 surplus and 7.62x39 Brass cased ammo. Both ~resonable .308 .80/rd and x39 under .50/rd.

It's out there ... Be patient.

Coming back? It’s been here for weeks/months.

You have millions of frightened brand new gun owners in America who don’t have any ammo saved up and are willing to pay virtually ANYTHING to stock up and many don’t even know what a good price on ammo is, they just know they NEED as much as they can possibly afford and as soon as it pops up anywhere, it’s GONE.

The timing of the Corona causing all these terrified people to suddenly realize the need to bear and keep, and the on top of that emergency we have now the most anti-gun upcoming POTUS possibly in American history, and it is them perfect storm of a vicious circle self fulfilling prophecy of proportions never before seen.

This is going to be the WORST AMMO SHORTAGE OF ALL TIME and is expected to last YEARS.

The smart ones reload and saw this coming and were prepared. I have enough ammo and reloading components bought during prosperous times to last the rest of my days.

What ammo shortage?

" I have 5,000 Wolf small rifle primers I would like to sell but I can't legally sell them on GB. I need an explosives license to ship them. "

A private individual can ship ammunition - but not primers.

I just saw a spp auction on GB that very clearly specified the buyer would have to pick up the primers in person. Maybe that's an option for you.

Agreed, doesn't fit the technical definition.

How about taking advantage of fellow shooters.

2016 shortage I sold bricks of .22 at my original cost to fellow league shooters so they could shoot the summer league. They were getting ready to pay whatever they had to to shoot. That's why I left the other 3 boxes of primers on the shelf when I bought mine. Hopefully the next guy bought what he NEEDED and left the rest for another person.

What kind of an auction would it be if the seller/ auctioneer slammed the gavel while the bidding was going on and declared AUCTION DONE! ALL OF YOU WHO WISH TO BID HIGHER MAY NOT DO SO!!!

Would that make sense?

That type of auction would not make sense.
I have no issue with auctions.
I don't even have as big of an issue with non shooters seeing ammo / component products as a investment / money making opportunity.
My issue is with fellow shooters taking advantage of fellow shooters.

But that's just me...

I'm a Certified Rifle Instructor, Scout Rifle Merit Badge Councillor and Volunteer RSO. At 60 I spend more time and money helping other shooters. Pay back for those who have helped me.

When it comes to auctions I bid my high price which I think is fair and leave it at that. If you have to have it at any price then that's on you. Some people just got into the game and feel that something is better than nothing and are willing to pay the price and that's fine by me. Not the same as water in a drought or food in a hunger in which case you are obligated by Morales and values and the Bible to help your fellow man.
Just my .02 cents I guess.

Have to say OP finding those primers for that price was an awesome deal at these current times .

I know people say not to pay the crazy prices and normally we dont have to but now people get desperate .

I saw some primers the other day and contacted the seller on Armslist only to have seen the person disappear once they had their money .

They were going to ship them to me as they were across the other end of the state .

Need to say I got scammed on top of paying more than I should have , be careful out there .

This person was very good and has not answered a single text I sent them .

I am out 300 hundred dollars and no primers to show for it .

You all finding them in the local store or getting them online dont know how lucky you are .

Anyhow wanted to remind people dont be stupid like me and end up with nothing , you will really regret it .

I was well-stocked for the shortages I saw in the past. I have enough on hand to shoot comfortably for a year or so. However, this shortage is different, I fear.

I recently paid $70 for 1000 large pistol primers, which is about a year's worth of shooting .45 Colt and 10mm for me. Already had 2000, so I am pretty well set.

Was just talking to a buddy from high school who just recently decided to get into shooting and bought an AR and an M&P pistol a couple of months ago. He has no idea what ammo should cost and said he was happy paying $700 for 1000 .223 that he found online. Now he's trying to find .40 S&W and will pay whatever it costs.

I fear it is new gun owners like him that are driving prices up. They are desperate for ammo and have no idea what it used to go for.

JCooperfan1911:

Despite other summaries with similar factors, yours is the best clear nutshell condensation I've noticed.

If we see hospital ICU occupancy rates on a downward trend (good vaccine effectiveness), and also no more widespread (because it was tolerated by politically cynical govts.) looting or large demonstrations this spring,
the panic bubble could Then show signs of deflation?

It's different this time, the state of the union is not strong, depending what happens on the 20th could be a catalyst Add COVID where manufactures are backlogged and it is a perfect storm. I disagree sites like gunbroker will be gone though after any court challenge, it will be sites like armslist that perpetuate people to privately meet up and sell.
Armslist is too busy committing suicide for the government to have to take action against them. There's a banner on the site now that indicates they are way behind on responding to emails and that they have suspended accepting new members at this time. I would be very surprised it that's because they are overwhelmed by people paying the membership fee.

Well no, I did start early this time before COVID hit for the calibers known to go but didn't expect odd calibers like 8mm Mauser and 6.5 Swede to be affected but they have been, the prices are way high and availabilty low.

Either way for the amounts I do have good supply they will be used sparingly for now. More .22 shooting for a while because I didn't get caught off guard on that this time.

My understanding is that factories only make one run per year of the odd calibers. When there is a shortage they don't make them at all and keep the machines cranking out the stuff everyone wants.

Yeah, if things calm down by June or so they will likely to runs of odder hunting cartridges in time for the fall seasons. Otherwise finding stuff like 35 Rem, 8MM, etc. seems like it will be limited to whatever is lost in a warehouse or stockroom, or whatever one shooter is willing to sell to another.

I think I got a good deal on all the components for loading 2000 rounds of .223 for .40 a round, still more than the old price for new but considering I just bought a new AR I need ammo, about .75 a round is what I have seen for the lowest on line prices...And was able to trade a couple guns I dont need anymore for it... There was a local shop/range that was selling small pistol primers for about 21.00 for 500 they broke down cases and limited everyone to 1 1/2 case ea...So hope thats a sign that reloading stuff and ammo might be back on the upswing.....

There is definitely gouging going on. I stepped into a range/gunshop in Hampton roads recently and wow! 300 blk wolf $28/20, 300blk 150s $75/50, 300blk 220 $40/20, .308 150s $40/20.

All prices on ammo were insane. But it is an indoor range as well and we all know what ammo prices look like at those.

I just refuse to buy at those prices. Stay stocked on powder, primers and projos. It is true supply and demand. I guess there are a lot of people out there willing to over pay for ammo right now. I would say resist the urge unless you really need it.
